I hope everyone is doing as well as possible considering the events of the past few days. I was wondering– is anyone else on AT&T having very poor/non-existent cell reception in the area?

    Ps. Happy Hallowween!

Not dog poop Eric, Ginkgo! :)

Lauren, I have AT&T. Cell phone reception and text messaging services are very good. My problem has been an ongoing “no data connection” message when I try to access email. This has been going on for months. It takes three tries to get a “connection” even with a strong signal gauge.

    what’s with the helicopters?

L – how long did it take you? My office will pay for a car, but given the traffic over the bridge, I suspect walking over the bridge + bus may indeed be faster.

Lauren/AmyinBH – I have Sprint & voice has been extremely spotty the past 2 days (but is never great in even normal times). Text and 3G weirdly has been fine aside from Mon night!

Just wanted to say a big thankyou to Homer and the other BHBers – outstanding job of keeping us informed through the storm and aftermath. BHB is truly a great community resource for our neighbourhood.

Does anyone know if Fairway in Red Hook is still open after the storm?

L – I walked out by Park Plaza diner this am right around 7 am, grabbed a cab, and got to 34th and 7th by right around 730/740. With the new guideline in place that there has to be at least 3 people to go across a bridge in any type of car beginning at 6am, wanted to see if anyone was interested in trying to grab a cab right around 650 or 700 tomorrow. Would you be interested?

    Anyone else?

Stephanie – I had a car reserved but they just cancelled it on me because they couldn’t find a driver with gas – if I can’t find another service willing to take me, I’ll probably be out there too! I hope the HOV rules will mean it won’t be too hard to jump into cars.

Wiley E, I was by Fairway on Tuesday it looked like they had been completely flooded. I would think it will be at least a few more days before they can open.

  • Mr. Crusty

I don’t think it is price gouging if car service charges more money when it will take a lot more time to make a trip than in normal times. Time is money. Why would you expect to pay the same for a trip that will take twice as long?

  • Mr. Crusty

Lots and lots of sirens this morning. Anybody have any idea what is going on?

  • Wiley E.

    Thanks, Arch.

To answer Mr. Crusty, in actuality, the trips using both car services (in and out) were quite quick. They did not take longer than usual, and in the case coming home (with the gouger car service), it was quicker as there was no traffic. We shot down the West Side Highway in minutes.

  • pssnyc

Additionally, Mr. Crusty, I don’t think the price was raised because the driver was coming in to pick us up to take us back, thereby making it a double trip. The driver had dropped someone else off just before picking us up, so was in the area already.

Being a park, the Promenade is Officially Closed—with bright yellow and blue tape from the NYPD and the Fire Dept.—but that hasn’t stopped thousands of people, including foreign tourists who walked over the Brooklyn Bridge from Manhattan, from walking past it onto the Promenade.

Some local tore all the tape down at the Orange and Remsen entrances to the Promenade; it was caught in the trees and was making a mess.

If Romney is elected, can you imagine Michelle Bachmann as Secretary of State? Ann Coutler as Secretary of the Interior? Wow.

  • JL

Sounds like some small explosions or something else going on here in the north Heights (or nearby). Or perhaps just construction vehicles. Any ideas? Haven’t heard any police response, so assume nothing to worry about. These days, you never know.

  • JL

Found answer. Planned munitions explosions at Ellis Island.
