BHB’s Heather Quinlan’s Knish Flick Covered on CBS This Morning

BHB contributor/filmmaker/Brooklyn Heights resident Heather Quinlan was a guest on CBS This Morning earlier this week discussing her upcoming documentary If These Knishes Could Talk. The package, as we say in the biz, ponders “are Americans losing their accents?” Watch the report after the jump.

    Brava Heather!

What this CBS piece missed (could it have been deliberate?) is the effect of TV and other mass media on the erosion of regional speech styles. I’ve found a distressing number of young (from my point of view, that means under 45) women who speak in the “Valley Girl” style popularized in the 1980s. These have included African American women from Atlanta and Asian American women from Texas. I want to take them all aside, play Professor Higgins in reverse, and teach them their proper regional speech.
