Bleeech! Fortune House is the Worst Says Former NYT Food Critic

Former New York Times food critic Sam Sifton (@SamSifton) tweeted his opinion on the “new” Fortune House [82 Henry Street] earlier this week:

Guess I have a new job, because I can now report Fortune House on Henry is officially in the running for worst Chinese restaurant in NYC.

Heights native Sifton did wax nostalgic about China Chilli a defunct Montague Street restaurant earlier this year in the Times. This is also not the first time Fortune House has had a food writer ponder its existence. Eater asked in 2009 – “Who Eats at Fortune House?”

The Henry Street eatery recently reopened after an issue over worker’s pay, a remodeling and adding a new co-owner.

Is Sifton off target or is he just tellin’ like it is?

My favorite Chinese restaurant in Chinatown is Hop Kee. In fact, I was there this past Sunday night and made a film for a friend from Lima. Peru to help her remember the event. The film includes my favorite dish, that being their delicious craps in a fantastic sauce. YUM.

    KJ, er, “craps”? sounds good.

Crabs, Hicks St. Guy, crabs! (Can’t get craps in Chinatown anymore,,,,)

  • Karl Junkersfeld

    Not a Freudian error. Crabs……

Trust me, it didn’t taste like crap or craps. haha

You went to Chinatown, and all you got were crabs?

You wanted him to buy you a lousy T-shirt?

  • AEB

…and, at Chinatown prices, get flea-ced? (OK: sorry!)

Great Wall may have gotten a “C” on their DOH evaluation but at least their food still tastes great. Fortune House’s soup stock is water! You get what you pay for at Great Wall; you pay more & get less at Fortune House. Been that way as long as I can remember. The only reason to go to FH is to get the scallion pancakes that GW doesn’t make.

    Knight,
Did you read the list of “critical” violations for Great Wall???
The one that jumps out at me is “live roaches in food area”.
If you feel comfortable with that, well, who am I to argue.

  • Knight

I am not as concerned with what I read on the DOH website as I am with what I see & know myself. I’ve never seen a roach at Great Wall. Maybe I just turn up on better days than the inspector did. I know that building (GW is part of the Cranlyn at 80 Cranberry)and its reputation for roach & rodent infestations, so I’m sure Bevacco has the same problems, just had a different inspector or were more prepared on the day he showed up. If I never ate at a restaurant that I thought had roaches, I’d probably never eat in a NYC restaurant again. Until I or someone I know actually receives contaminated food, I’ll assume GW is just as (un)healthy as anyplace else on Henry Street.
