AL- really? I mean I assumed so.. but how did you find out?

  • AmyinBH

If you declineto take a photo for the tourists and they will not take no for an answer, turn into a “Rude New Yorker”. The nasty comment will work and they will have a fun story about how they met a real “Rude New Yorker”.

Is there a new millenium word that replaces “Yuppie”?

  • Wrennie

Does anyone else have the following gripe?

Every Tuesday night, after my super puts out our recycling, some homeless person comes and rummages through our trash for literally about a half hour, looking for cans and bottles. It’s pretty obnoxious: first of all, it’s just noisy and goes on for way too long, way too late at night; second of all, can’t they go to a different neighborhood, and not a nice one?

Ditto for the homeless guy who “lives” in the Clark Street Station–this isn’t the neighborhood for that.

    Is any of this illegal?

  • David on Middagh

@Wrennie: I live in a small apartment house, and separate my deposit-bearing containers into their own little bag placed near or atop the other recyclables. It really shortens the stop-off time for whoever wants them.

I used to collect bottles and cans for spending money when I was young, so I’m sympathetic. I think it’s a much better way to make cash, for some people, than begging on the street, or stealing.

  • Heightser

Our super puts all of the return for deposit stuff into one container so there is no rummaging. They come by and take the whole bag.

AmyinBH, I think I found that new name for “yuppie”…it’s wrennie.

The lady you are discribing was from what many would describe as a “good” family. She knew much about a very surprising portion of the “old casino families in the area. I was told by police
she had cancer. She appeared to have a long untreated mental
condition. I and a number of others made inquieries and found that to get someone in her situation admitted to an effective
program of treatment involved unbelievable delay and such
complications that it was very very difficult. She was a terrible
example of the social effects of where we are as a society.

re: Nabeguy’s misanthropic doggy doo remark – having a bad day, old boy? My thesis is being proved again. The more one posts, the more hostile the remarks seem to be. “You’ve got a lot of nerve…”

As for a reply: I throw out the waste products so that they won’t be littering the sidewalk and no one will have to slide home. The wastebasket in question is/was strategically located so that Promenade, park & playground users could throw out their trash instead of littering the dead-end.

Has anyone noticed a guy between the ages of 17-20 years old on the corner of Atlantic Ave and Hicks Street, right outside the Deli? He is wearing a puffy, short, black coat with his hood pulled tight barely showing his face? and baggy sweat pants? The last 4 days that I have driven down hicks or up clinton I see him just standing and watching people. I have noted that I have seen him between the hours of 1-3pm. I have a weird feeling about this guy, I have yet to see anything happen but just keep your eyes open.

  • GHB

Emily, I saw him last week (I think) walking down Henry in Cobble Hill. It was real weird considering it was one of those rare, beautiful and warm sunny days.

  • emily

Yes I did see him then too and he was walking down the street just staring at everyone. He is very easy to spot considering his outfit is always the same.

David on Middagh commented to me about this thread… I am always happy to take photos for people, and try to compose the best photo I can. I go out of my way to suggest good shots for them. I frequently talk to tourists, tell them about the many movies shot here and the buildings that appeared in the films. Lastly, I ask where people are from: lots of tourists from Europe, plus Australia.

I do, however, tend to avoid the Promenade on weekends, when it’s very crowded. The only good thing about the Promenade on weekends is that there is good people watching, esp. during the summer.

Wrennie, once you’ve put your trash out for collection, it’s not illegal for people to rummage through it. Hence I shred important documents. It s, however, illegal for people to collect recyclables set out for the city to collect.

Through a neighbor who was a contact for authorities when Pigtails, terminally ill w cancer, was taken to medical facility on Roosevelt Island.

  • weegee

Was she the one who used to sit on the stoop between the deli and Fortune House on Henry? What of the guy who, I presume, had a variant of Tourette’s, that used to hang out with her?

  • EHinBH

    – Shake Shack is coming to the Fulton Mall (on the corner where the abandoned pizza place is)

    – We should always take pictures and give directions.

  • nabeguy

soulman, no reason to bark at me. I was simply entertaining an idle thought that sanitation workers may not appreciate the idea of having to pick up dog droppings in addition to the detritus that humans toss their way. The fact is, I’m glad you’re not one of those people that deposits their steaming ziplock bags in the public trash bins rather than in mine. The folks who indulge in the latter practice are the ones with a “lot of nerve”

  • WillowtownCop

@ Emily- I have seen him in the park at the end of Columbia Place in the middle of the night. He’s the reason I don’t cut through that park if I take the bus home anymore.

I would suggest carrying pepper spray and calling him in as a suspicious person if you feel like he’s following you. If he’s stopped enough for being in the park after its closed, etc. maybe he’ll get the hint that he’s not welcome around here and leave.

  • T.K. Small

@EHinBH: I don’t think that the pizza shop has been abandoned. That has been a viable business since I went to BLS in the early 90s. Probably the rent was raised insanely and they decided to pack it in, which is unfortunate. I wish Shake Shack success, but I hope that the location doesn’t turn into a series of revolving unsuccessful ventures.

weegee, Pig tails was this lady that always wore leather jackt and leather boots.. I do remember she used to hang around with a man once in a while, I always wondered how old she really was.. as her face was always dirty from living outside. It is a shame she died.. but at least she is no longer suffering on the streets. It seems that BKH always has quite the characters.. has anyone seen the stalker on hicks?

  • Still here

Claude/take my picture – I agree with Claude. But I actually take several pix when asked and try to create a good composition. I want tourist to remember what a great neighborhood/bridge/view this is and what swell people we are.

Otherwise, a polite ‘no’ is perfectly OK.

  • PierrepontSkin

I too have seen this young man with the hood and sweatpants. He’s definitely suspicious. The first time I saw him was on Pierrepont between Henry and Monroe Place. I walked by him and he slowed down (even more so from the extremely slow pace he already walks) and I got a bit uneasy. I’ve continued to see him, mainly on Saturday and Sunday afternoons, either in Cobble Hill (in proximity to P.S. 29) or around the Heights. Even in the middle of the day, with a bunch of other people on the street, I get incredibly uncomfortable and I force myself to cross the street.

  • suzette

The guy with the Hoodie “lives” in the park at the bottom of State and Columbia…he may or may not be dangerous but he is definitely homeless…
