Opening today at the Brooklyn Heights Cinema is House of Sand (trailer), rated R. The Brazilian film stars real life mother and daughter Fernanda Montenegro and Fernanda Torres. Both play multiple roles. It's directed by Andrucha Waddington with a screenplay by Elena Soarez.
Michael Phillips writes in the Chicago Tribune: Soarez isn't really saying much with "House of Sand," beyond marveling at the quirks of fate brought on by time. But the acting keeps it from floating into the ether. In that key early shot of Montenegro and Torres bravely facing the wind and a forbidding life far from the city, an artful tall tale takes on a life of its own. The best of what follows feels discovered rather than planned, and the discoveries come from the right actors making the best and simplest choices, while the camera and the surroundings do the rest.
