    Justaneighbor:
I asked this question about a month ago. Several people suggested Excel Motors (Joke is the owner or manager). I took their advice and I dropped the car off in the morning, no appointment, and picked it up that afternoon. I recall it was$28. No unpleasant surprises.

Thank you all very much! I really appreciate it!

Beginner, my two cents: I nearly joined EAC last year and found it to be a most depressing tour. The membership advisor was asleep at the switch, the gym was empty and it was laid out very strangely. I’d have gone to NYSC if I lived closer to Cobble Hill because the one on Remsen is awful compared to the past few NYSC locations I’d been a member of.

Equinox (albeit expensive) seemed to be the best fit for me. Hope that helps!

Over the past 10 years I’ve been a member of Equinox, New York Sports, Gold’s, and EAC (all in Brooklyn Heights).

By far the best one is Equinox (and that’s why it’s the most expensive). But if you can afford it, do it. The place is so clean you can eat off the floor (that’s just a figure of speech). The staff is great and it’s never too crowded. The classes are great too – especially the Yoga classes. And I’m pretty sure the nice environment encouraged me to go more often and get my money’s worth.

EAC was better in the past. The staff is indifferent, and they don’t do many little things like give you pastic bags for your wet work out clothes. When it’s not crowded with students it tends to be a much older crowd. They also don’t have those cushy exercise mats that gyms like Equinox and NYSC have. This is painful on your knees if you have knee problems like me.

NYSC is fully funtional as well. Cheaper than Equinox and EAC, though not nearly as clean. The Cobble Hill location is cleaner than the Court and Remsen location, but it doesn’t have steam rooms.

Gold’s is your cheapest option. It’s smaller than NYSC, but still fully functional. Still, pretty good for the price.

I have never been a member of the local YMCA, but I recently took a tour and thought they had too little equipment. The pool is nice though.

Have been a member of EAC and Equinox. Equinox is much much better on every level. They have Packer parent discounts and other discount programs you can ask about. I recently priced the two. I told EAC what Equinox was offering as a deal..and EAC said they’d match it (I was thinking it would be a lot less). At that rate, or anything close, Equinox hands down.

Correction to my post above. It was $38 not $28.

Bob, EAC was willing to match? My company has a plan for reduced membership fee with them on LI which is significantly lower. I have been trying to get a lower rater for months with no luck, or at least meet somewhere in the middle between the two rates. But apparently the LI and NYC locations are different entitities.

Gee I miss the garlands and lights on the Montague lamp posts this year. They were always to charming. The blue lights, on the other hand are a bit like a poor man’s Tavern Not on the Green.

The Equinox on Joralemon is unbelievable- so worth the money- a few extra dollars- for an amazing amount of extras- the staff is so friendly- the management really cares about its members- i have been a member since they opened-you should at least take a tour and see the difference for yourself-its immaculate-the equipment is state of the art- no wait -no sign up- never crowded

  • Nick

I should add that another great thing about Equinox is that the free weights are always where they’re supposed to be. At all the other gyms I’ve had to hunt for the free weights I needed to use for my workout. This may seem trivial, but it makes a difference if you only have a limited amount of time to exercise.

Thanks everyone for the helpful info!

By the way, I also want to tell all of those involved in BHBlog that I really appreciate all of their work and I think the site is truly valuable to the neighborhood. Thank you!

  • http://diarreah.com Never Again Eating Chipotle

I ate a burrito 3 days ago from the Montague Chipotle and am just now feeling confident that I’m not going to die from it.

As I watched them slop on the guacamole I knew it didn’t look right –the next morning I was ruined with gastroenteritis (stomach flu).

    Am I the only one?

Coulda told u that before u went

Avocado turns brown very quickly when it’s exposed to air, but that doesn’t mean it’s spoiled. You are more likely to get sick from the lettuce.

  • Nick

Something was definitely off with the food at Chipotle this week. I got sick too.
