Another OTW —

Filming movies in the nabe. Big pain or really cool? What's your favorite flick film shot in Brooklyn Heights?

Car break ins on the rise? Anyone go to the 84th Precinct community meeting last night?

Here come the Love Lane condos! No parking spaces for you!

Anyone remember the Billy Goat

Dick Swizzle's Sudden Death Gameshow tonight… you think Bloomie will show up

The 1977 Blackout happened 30 years ago this month. All I remember is getting out of the house to buy batteries just as the lights came back on. What are your memories?

… and whatever you have on your mind…

Bloomie won’t show, but I will, with high hopes of doing better than last time.

I’ve got no problem with filiming in the ‘hood. It brings in major tax revenue, employs tons of New Yorkers and (I say wishfully) shows off our neighborhood on the big screen, making property values rise. Yes, there can be inconvenience and noise and parking troubles, but it’s worth the trade off in my mind.

no filming going on at 11 am…..

I didn’t see any trucks or vans parked anywhere either. Maybe the torrential downpour put a damper on their film plans?

Anyone know where I can offload 3 garbage bags full of my old clothes? Im moving out of the country and don’t want to bring it all with me. I live near Clark station, so anything near there is ideal.

    Thanks!

Bring your clothes to Clothing Works on Montague Street.

Housing Works on Montague is great. Your donation is also tax deductible. I dropped off 2 huge garbage bags full of stuff and they didn’t even blink. So easy, so wonderful.

On the day when the film crew takes miles of street parking and the congestion pricing plan (with resident parking) dies, we are also wrestling with the Love Lane garage closing. Sounds like the city is gearing up for more ticket revenue.

You can also call the Salvation Army and they will come to you for clothing pickups. 212.337.7200. (Note, this is not an endorsement of SA, since I know many folks have problems with them for one reason or another)

Housing Works is also great, and very easy. I think they also accept housewares which SA doesn’t.

How do we stop bicyclists, skate boarders and speed scooters on the Promenade? I already contacted the BHA and they’re going to put up two more signs, but it seems that there’s more and more of them on the Promenade. I feel like the Promenade Police Nazi, but it would be good if other people said something, too. Thanks.

    Here’s what’s on my mind:

1 – My basement flooded today — bad. Anyone else?

2 – Since my basement flooded, I took the day off. A friend took my to Siggy’s to calm me down. It was lovely. UNTIL the woman in the kitchen started to verbally BERATE a man who works with her. I mean BERATE. She called him incompetent, told him all of these things were his fault, etc. She yelled loudly for several minutes at him about how useless he was.

He very quietly tried to calm her down but she was NOT hearing it. The kitchen is REALLY open and everyone seated in the restaurant could hear what she was saying. I found it HIGHLY unprofessional and unsettling. Does she run the place? If I find out she’s an owner, I will NOT be back. I can’t patronize a place that treats its employees so badly. Yuck. It turned my stomach, quite literally.

SPM: I’m an avid biker, I ride about 60-80 miles a week, I go over the BB at least three times a week… and I TOTALLY agree with you!!! I can remember a cyclist nearly hit my daughter when she was climbing out of her stroller (she was like 18 mo at the time) and if it weren’t for the fact that I was by myself I would have chased him ’till I caught him (I couldn’t even curse, since I was with the kid!). To this day I try to stop people, sometimes I’ll be walking (WALKING) my own bike and try to stop the others.

The BHA is useless on this… what’s needed is more police, and more officers who are willing to hand out tickets (good luck). But you’re dead right, and know that there are cyclists who agree with you.

Spm, totally agree on the bicyclists on the Promenade. They make my blood boil; I always thought I was a Promenade Nazi too!

  • Heights97

I am glad someone brought up the problem of cyclists on the Promenade. They are a real hazard, and I wish something would be done about it. No need for heavy handed tactics by the police. They don’t need to write lots of tickets. In most cases I think just asking the offender to stop and explaining it’s against the rules would be enough.

I was walking with my son on henry st the other day and two cyclists going pretty fast on the sidewalk shouts, “excuse me” to us to move out of the way. We nearly jumped out of our skin. The last time I checked I think they are suppose to be riding in the streets. Also I almost got hit by a delivery guy once on Pierrepont and Henry. He was going fast on the sidewalk.

BTW truly off topic but why do they only sell seedless watermelon? I don’t find it as tasty as the ones with seeds.

Thanks for all the supporting feedback. As for Joe’s query, yes, it is illegal for people to ride their bikes on the sidewalks, as it is for speeding scooters, rollerskaters and skateboarders.

I have done the polite thing on the Promenade, sometimes it’s met with politeness, othertimes (and mainly so) it’s ignored – including one man who said “I’ve lived in the Heights for 20 years and no one has told me to get off the bike!” This he said right in front of the sign! It might be a good source of revenue for the city if some of the traffic police also policed the Promenade and started handing out tickets.

Anyway, thanks again. If more of us make people aware, perhaps it won’t be an issue in the future.

I love when Brooklyn Heights is in a film! You all should check out “The Baxter” a cute film with Boerum Hill resident Michelle Williams – tons of scenes along Montague and on the promenade…

  • Cranky

And another thing about the Promenade. The buildings on Columbia Heights have started watering their gardens and they drench the benches so nobody can sit down. That irks me. I don’t remember that happening in prior years. GRRRR.
