Charlie Mitchell, Named New York’s Best Chef, Leaving Brooklyn Heights for Manhattan

Charlie Mitchell (photo), whom the James Beard Foundation named Best Chef In New York, is leaving Clover Hill, 20 Columbia Place, the restaurant that, under his direction, earned Brooklyn Heights its first Michelin Star. According to Eater he will go to Saga, at 70 Pine Street in Manhattan’s Financial District. Since Michelin Stars are awarded to restaurants, not to individual chefs, we presume Clover Hill will keep its star unless and until a Michelin evaluator decides it is no longer worthy. We also presume Clover Hill’s remaining team will carry on, continuing to serve the dishes Chef Mitchell perfected, and perhaps adding some new ones.

According to Cloverhill’s website Mitchell is a partner, as well as (former) Chef. Assuming he maintains that interest, the menu probably won’t change much.

Hope this is not a sign of distress. That space has had its share of businesses come and go.

Iris Cafe was there for ten years and was a gem. The owners pressured the chef to move to a more dinner-focused high end restaurant because they weren’t making enough money as one of the best brunch spots in the neighborhood. Well that wonderful chef left, and now Iris Cafe is basically a sad grocery store cafe in Brooklyn Bridge Park.

So I take issue with the assessment that the space had businesses come and go. Ten years is pretty good for a brunch spot.
