Just in case it was not noticed, the new Bodegay spot, Olive + Garlic opened up on Montague Street this week. Appear to have a nice selection for breakfast and lunch stuff among other food/household items you would need.

Bodegary*, that’s what I get for making up a word and not hitting a key.

Penthouse at 67 Livingston rented for $40,000/mo

Less than a year after a Brooklyn Heights townhouse set the mark for the borough’s priciest rental, a nearby penthouse has beaten it — by a third.

The penthouse at 67 Livingston Street was on the market for only two days before new tenants landed it for $40,000 a month — sight unseen. It’s the highest single-unit property rental in Brooklyn since Miller Samuel started tracking the data in 2008, beating by $10,000 a month 149 Clinton Street, which rented last July.

Saw this! Such a great win for them — from a tough and world-renowned critic, no less. Thrilled for them and will continue to support!

I’ve found the Covid testing van that’s been showing up on mornings at Montague and Henry has been great for getting quick rapids or PCRs. With insurance, it’s free and once you sign up, testing there is fast. Good for travel or just peace of mind if you’re worried about exposures or symptoms.

And it looks like the one at Jay & Johnson is ?? semi-permanent. I pass it frequently & never see a line. Nothing against Montague & Henry, but it surely has heavier foot traffic nearby. If there’s a “bad week” ahead – or they start throwing in a monkeypox test – “wait time” may become a testing disincentive. Plus, it’s at least a little like an MD’s waiting room – maybe, not a great place to spend even 15 minutes during flu season.

Yesterday I walked past that soon-to-open restaurant, Amai Bā, at 70 Henry Street, and noticed the lettering on the windows is on the outside, not the inside—which is not allowed under Landmarking rules. I suspect (I didn’t try) you can peel it off with your fingers.

The architect’s office at the corner of Hicks and Middagh, which at one time was Biblo Books, is now some sort of food warehouse, filled with cans. Don’t know who or what it’s a warehouse for. Here’s a 1940 tax photo which explains why the word “drugs” is embedded in the tiles at the entrance:

Here’s a real estate brochure for 160 Columbia Heights, the deco building at the corner of Clark Street, whose rear wall is now directly on the Promenade. See the layout and the sales brochure in my replies (click to enlarge):

In case anyone missed it, looks like the new Brooklyn Heights library branch is set to open June 8th.

I also posted about this last week, but exciting that Brooklyn Poets are opening a physical location for workshops on Montague St. Does anyone know if it will have a bookstore component, too? (Poetry or beyond; fiction / non-fiction, etc.)?

Whole bunch of really negative comments there, including this from “Sendan” (another Troll hiding behind a screen name):

“More trashy food and smoke and mirrors. Im sure pork shoulder braised in Cola and cheap mustard is next. Thats is the hillbilly way to cooking. Pete loves grease and inferior products to make himself feel comfortably above it all. But no matter the big-shot’s review grease is grease. And can we stop with braised salads of any sort. Sure, get lazy and grill and douse what you cant get with delicate seasoning or from nature. It’s cheap, easy, brainless and excessive like american cheese on a double paddy burger.

“As a word of caution; there’s a reason why the chef has closed so many restaurants in his past. And there is a reason why Pete Wells has such a commercial taste.”

Why would you choose to repost a very nasty and poorly written comment on a new local business here? To what end?

This was 10 years ago. Take a navy man out to eat while they are here in NYC. At minimum, buy them a drink.

As of 6/26 6:38am there are NOT a “whole bunch of really negative comments” on The NY Times website. Furthermore, that review you quoted does not exist.

  • Andrew Porter

Not a review—a comment. Did you click on the comments there? Now 44 in all, including mine.

You can order Covid tests through USPS. If you’ve ordered before, you are probably eligible to order more now. I’ve ordered tests twice and both shipments were delivered within 3 to 4 days.

Yup, I ordered mine a few days ago.

Also, if anyone seeking to replenish their mask supply, DemeTech is having a Memorial Day weekend sale: https://shop.demetech.us/

I have no personal stake in the company but their N95s are good, and American-made.

Oh dear god. Last week I reported my first ride on the new Clark Street elevators resulted in 2 of the 3 being out of order.

Today, Saturday at 6pm, one was marked as out of the service until Tuesday. About 14 people got in one of the other two. It started climbing. It gave a jolt. It slowed down. It continued upward at a glacial pace. I mean SLOW. You could see the concrete passing the window. I’m talking so slow it was hard to notice movement unless you watched carefully. People got nervous. But progress was visible. The street level came into sight. The window the the street came into view. The windows were slowly creeping into alignment.

And then, just as the windows were within inches of being aligned there was a jolt and the elevator plummeted at a rapid pace back down to the train level. About 5 minutes to go up, about 15 seconds down. Everyone got out and climbed the stairs.

    Sigh.

Yesterday evening I was walking by the station and saw NYPD pull up. They got out and talked to the MTA elevator repair crew already on site – fixing elevator(s) where trapped passengers had called 911.
