OK, all you OTW fans, I’ve been slo-o-o-w getting this one on line. What’s on your mind? Comment away!

Such a strange time for our neighborhood. In addition to all the restaurant closings on Montague, noticed Red Gravy hasn’t been open and looks in disrepair. Always liked it there. Anyone know what’s up?

My girlfriend and I recently moved into Brooklyn Heights. We absolutely love the neighborhood, but we keep hearing this curious noise several times throughout the day that we cannot figure out the origin of (and no, it’s not the helicopters). It’s not bothersome or annoying in any way, but simply perplexing. I hope someone in the BH community will be able to help identify it and quell our curiosity.

The best I can describe the sound is a two-toned beep. It goes from a high-pitch to low-pitch tone, with each tone lasting only about a half second. I can’t discern any pattern of when it goes off. It’s loud enough to be heard from every window of our apartment. We have our own theories of what this is, but I’m hoping someone can shed light on the source of this sound.

I see a couple references to Red Gravy closing on Yelp but nothing official. That would be a shame. It was never the absolute best Italian restaurant in the neighborhood but it’s been a solid contender and an anchor of that stretch of Atlantic. I’ve had great meals at River Deli and Sociale recently so I can understand that the competition is pretty intense.

Red eared slider! Juvenile! From the photo it’s hard to tell but I want to say female…

I tried Brado last week, it was excellent pizza. It’s thin crust so it is different than the others around. They had great lunch specials and a nice bar with a variety of beer choices. Free pizza with a pitcher of beer so I couldn’t pass that up. Nice addition to have even though we have a lot of pizza choices already.

  • Bongo

That doesn’t read like a PR spot at all.

Are you near a firehouse? Sounds like the alarm when a call comes in.

Early this summer I photographed two adult red-eared sliders in the same pond at Pier 1, Brooklyn Bridge Park. My first thought when I saw this one is that it might be their offspring. More likely it’s someone’s discarded pet.

    Welcome to the neighborhood!

Is the ER at LICH still open? If not what is the closest/best option. We had a little scare tonight, didn’t need the ER after all but made me realize I don’t know what are the options available.

  • Heightsman

Sadly people in the Heights especially north of Montague will not venture that far to Atlantic. It’s a fact. I am a statistic and so are the many neighbors of mine. We all also know we’re missing some great stuff but Jack the Horse, Noodle Pudding, Sociale are fine enough.

Yes, but it’s part of NYU now. 83 Amity Street. Mt. Sinai offers urgent care at 300 Cadman Plaza West.

I always did. That said, if you haven’t been to Armando’s in a while, the daughter is now running it. Trimmed down menu but left all the good stuff on and wht we had was arguably better than before.

hi! we at the bk heightscast did a segment on open thread wednesdays. you can listen here if you’re so inclined: http://bkheightscast.com/im-a-joraleman/

Depends on where you are. If you’re in a high building, it could be issuing from some mechanical, maybe on the roof. If you’re near the Brooklyn Bridge, could be coming from the construction site underneath. In any case, high or low rise, could be a neighbor. Try walking around your block and/or in your stairwells. If you have a management company, contact them. I’ve done this in the past, and successfully.

  • DIBS

Thanks for the recognition but your delivery reminds me of the SNL skit of NPR with the two women and Alec Baldwin, minus the humor of course. And, commenting about what’s going on in an OT is much more lame than actually commenting in the OT. Juddayin. LOL

Does anyone know what was happening on Clark last night? Lots of fire trucks, and a strong petroleum odor.

  • ColumbiaHeightster

    Schwetty Balls!

  • ColumbiaHeightster

Speaking from as personal experience as one can have, I can tell you definitively that your statement is just false.

  • DIBS

Only when I walk all the way down to Atlantic Ave in the Summer.

I’m going to preface this question by acknowledging that it will make me sound whiny and old and out of touch, despite a fading but somehow prevailing self-image of youth and hipness. Cognitive dissonance, fine. OK, with that out of the way, *wtf* was up with the blaring techno-disco-bridge and tunnel club thumping on Friday and Saturday nights? I couldn’t quite tell where it was coming from (maybe across the river?), but standing on the promenade or anywhere on Columbia Heights or Willow or Hicks both nights was like being trapped in a nightmarish Staten Island wedding reception for a couple that everyone knows really shouldn’t get married for fear that they’d manage actually to procreate. I guess what I’m asking is, what DJ’s kneecaps do I need to break to ensure that never happens again?

  • DIBS

You forgot to include somewhat bigoted and judgemental. Jussayin.

  • ldny

Red Gravy is closed. The owner has been trying to sell off the remainder of the lease.

  • CHatter

    And violent, don’t forget violent.

The allowed sound levels are waaay too high. We get this from Cadman Park during the summer. Shakes the windows, rattles the bones. I spoke with a police officer at the last event, who said the levels were monitored for decibel limits. I don’t believe it. DEP is responsible for enforcement. Try getting them on a weekend…

  • JaneonOrange

If you live in the North Heights, I think I know the sound–but have never identified it. It sounds like it comes from the Henry Street area.

  • JaneonOrange

I know there was some kind of concert on one of the piers in Manhattan–but I thought it was Thursday. I could hear it on the Esplanade and in BBP.

  • Heightsman

No more false than true. It’s all perspective. Never said ALL people.

You should go on the show, Dibs!
