I’m not waving the white flag yet {8-) …but I’m still having issues with Disqus on this site. I like to comment once in a while but I find that I have to sign on again every time I move to a different window or story – this has already happened this am. On other sites (eg: HuffPost) I can sign on, navigate all over the place and not have to sign on again to comment on a different story.

Has there ever been landscaping at 195 Hicks (southeast corner of Hicks/Pierrepont)? It’s a little bit of an eyesore to walk past a bunch of tall weeds surrounding the building.

  • BrooklynBugle

Due to some excessive trolling recently we set Disqus to require email verification. We’ve rolled that back for the time being.

  • Rick

Yes, there were still hedges as of several years ago, which while not well-maintained were vastly preferable to the situation now, which is stumps of the former hedges surrounded by weeds. When the weeds are occasionally removed, the view changes to stumps and dirt.

I was told that the owner removed the hedges because she believed that criminals might be lurking in them! I didn’t hear this directly from the owner, so I can’t verify this as the reason, but it was told to me by someone who did speak to the owner.

Isn’t that building a twin with the building next door that extends to Montague? Amazing how the two buildings are so different, yet so similar. If I lived there, I’d be pissed that it’s in such disrepair.

  • miriamcb

The building that goes down to the Montague (205) is owned condos. Not sure if that’s true of 195 – for some reason, I thought those were rentals.

  • miriamcb

I wish there was something to be done about it! I’d rather garden the space myself than see it like that!

  • miriamcb

Oh – I meant to ask. Was there some kind of formal/final answer from the 84th about the vandalism that occurred last week?

Elevator #3 was out this morning on the 2/3 train at Clark Street. I hope it’s back up now.

  • Pineappler

Anyone know when we’re getting elevator #2 back?

  • BH Resident

I wish to bring up the situation at the Key Food Recycling Center. I am a rather poor BH resident – by BH standards – and I am not too proud to recycle my soda bottles – product, let me stress, that I actually purchase at Key. Yet WHENEVER, and I repeat WHENEVER, I try to recycle MY OWN bottles, well…if you’ve ever seen the line of recyclers with their bags and bags and bags…Look, I don’t begrudge people an honest buck, but I don’t think this is fair. There should be some sort of procedure in place allowing people who actually buy the product at the store to recycle first (receipts or something). And what I’d really like to know: Was it Bloomberg who initiated the recycling law of bottles and cans in the first place? If so, I am not surprised. Leave it to him and his billionaire self to encourage people to dig in garbage for a couple of bucks.

Amazing to see cars being towed from the streets that are being resurfaced while the construction workers just pull up on the sidewalk and park their cars there. Why can’t residents do the same thing? Noticed this morning on Clark street and Henry.

  • David on Middagh

It’s a state law that preceded Mayor Bloomberg. I used to visit NYC in the ’70s; the gutters of Ocean Parkway were lined with the glass shards of non-returnable soda and beer bottles. It shocked me: Vermont had had a deposit law for years by then. (The nearest corner store tolerantly redeemed all the Schlitz and RC Cola containers I found in the parks and on the neighborhood lawns and in the wooded lots.)

  • AEB

A question: I noticed that the stone blocks that surround the soil in which trees were recently planted in front of and on the Middagh side of the new apartment building at Henry and Middagh were broken up and removed by the resurfacers. (This is the longest sentence I’ve ever written.)

    Why?

  • Carlotta

I haven’t been down to the BBP this past week, but a few Sundays ago there were kids swimming in the river at the beach and adults wading. Evidently the signs were down. I wrote to the email listed for the park and they responded by saying they hope that people will obey the signs! Disaster waiting to happen – hope I’m wrong. Oh, and who left their thinking cap off when designing a beach where you can’t even wade???

  • Jorale-man

That building does look pretty shabby with all of those weeds surrounding it. You’d think the residents would be bothered. Especially when considering that’s otherwise one of the nicer blocks of the Central Heights.

It wasn’t back up as of 830pm tonight.

  • BrooklynCoffeeLover

It says August, but who knows.

  • BrooklynCoffeeLover

People in charge never think the law applies to them. Just take a look at the NYPD. Same idea.

  • Brixtony

Still happening today. I read this page, logged in and then looked at the beautiful duck pix, but had to login for the duckies as well as this page when I returned.

Anyone know if Pierhouse will have affordable housing units within? If so, will there be a separate entrance as the Toll Brothers are installing in one of their Manhattan buildings?

  • someone

Pierrepont and Clark street being prime examples for that for years.

  • TB

Yes. no worries. You will not have to mingle with the poor people and be embarassed by them when your friends come over.

  • Allison C.

In last week’s open thread I posted a call for any neighbors looking to form a walking group and there seemed to be interest but I never heard from anyone. If folks are still interested, please email me at brooklynwriterac @ gmail.com. Thanks!

Tonight a large, blaring ad for the National Association of Manufacturers was erected in front of (or perhaps on the property of) the First Unitarian Church at the corner of Pierrepont and Monroe. How did they ever get permission to put up a billboard in a residential area? You have to see it to believe it. Appalling and completely out of place. And shame on whoever allowed it. It should GO!

  • David on Middagh

The North Heights is being buzzed repeatedly by a helicopter. Not sure if it’s the same one that was circling the Brooklyn Bridge earlier tonight during the park movie, but it sure sounds loud and low. (The only way to keep people from stealing the Bridge flags? Bah.)

  • PubliusBklyn

It’s for a movie that’s being shot there. It likely will go as soon as the shooting is complete.

  • BrooklynCoffeeLover

Strange. I never have to log in here.
