What Will “Seedlings” on Henry Street Be?

Our man with a cam, Karl Junkersfeld, has prodded and probed his North Heights sources – including building owner Jim Montemarano – on what the new establishment at 37 Henry Street will be. All we know is that it will be named “Seedlings”.

This isn’t the first time a mysterious sign has heralded a new business in the North Heights. In 2007, the so-called “partners” behind the ill fated Busy Chef posted a note asking passersby if they were “curious” about what was to come. Oh, if we knew then what we knew now.

At least we do know now that one of the most respected business owners in Brooklyn Heights is behind whatever will be in this space. And that is a good thing.

    You really should check out Junior Lowe on Atlantic between Hicks and Henry St. Great children’s store with clothing, books and amazing kids shoes. Tons of fun and different colors. I particularly love these shoes http://tinyurl.com/juniorloweshoes. Plus it is always great to support a store that is run by people from the neighborhood and also features products from local vendors.

    Is the number really “37”? If yes, I find this beyond discouraging! I had just (finally?!) determined that all even numbers are on the West and South sides of the streets, and all odd numbers are on the East and North sides…. Please, Karl, say it ain’t so.

    Don’t despair, bornhere – it has to be an error. Noodlepudding is #38, so it seems rather odd that Seedlings, right next door, would be #37.

    Thanks for the info, a pre-school right down the block from PS8. We are going to have some smart kids walking around the nabe. Surely, Brooklyn Heights is characterized as “the little town that time forgot, and the decades cannot improve,” and as the town “where all the women are strong, all the men are good-looking, and all the children are above average.” Sound familiar.

    The neighborhood could really use another preschool/daycare center, so this will be a good addition, especially to the North Heights.

    There are alreadyat least six first rate, licensed, accredited pre-schools, nursery schools and kindergartens in the Heights. Plymouth Church School, Grace Church School, Packer, St Ann’s, Montessori, and Brooklyn Friends School.

    Can you just open up an actual school like you open up a deli? I would think to be credible, they would need to have a major facility and be run by an established organization like the others.

    While I would have loved it to be a gardening store…..I happen to have neighbors who live in the neighborhood and had to go outside of the neighborhood for pre-k because there were no spaces available in either Plymouth, Grace, or PS8. So another pre-school is clearly needed in the neighborhood.

    PromGal, those six nursery schools can’t begin to serve all the children who now live here and need a placement. Also, because there is such demand for those few slots the schools are very, very picky about who they accept. So another nursery is welcome and actually the neighborhood could use another full day daycare as well. Thankfully those days of worrying about getting into a preschool are behind me, but it was stressful.

    Totally agree with She’s Crafty. Packer, friends and st Ann’s don’t have 2s programs and are insanely expensive which leaves only 3 options for all Dumbo and BH residents: Grace, Plymouth or BHS and you pretty much need to be a church or synagogue member to get into them. I have a lot of friends who got wait listed everywhere simply bc there was no space. We are very excited for our son to go to BHS next year, but would have been interested in options that weren’t religiously affiliated as well.

    BHMommy: Brooklyn Friends does have a 2’s program: The Family Center at Brooklyn Friends. Beautifully run program!

    Hello, Friends-

    Seedlings will be a learning center. During the day, we will have a preschool program for 3’s and 4’s, and in the PM hours, we will offer academic enrichment in reading,writing and math. We are currently in the process of renovating other parts of the building, and are considering other arts based afterschool classes such as dance, music or art. We will offer an option of pick up from local schools.

    We are hosting an open house on Sunday, 9/23, from 2-5pm. Please come visit us and bring the children. We’ll have a musical performer, face painter, balloon maker, and of course, milk and cookies!

    I look forward to meeting you all then.
