Here’s the deal folks, Maceo Parker is playing on Pier 1 tonight. Mr. Parker not only played with the legendary James Brown but also with George Clinton’s Parliament-Funkadelic among others.
Ladies and gentlemen, Mr. Parker played on some of the greatest albums in the history of recorded music. We’re talking practically every P-Funk album released in the 1970s and most of James Brown’s groundbreaking music of the 1960s.
It might get loud tonight. But it’s all good, for the Mothership (at least part of it) has landed in Brooklyn Heights. Maybe not to reclaim the pyramids, but at least to show us how to have a good time again.
When you hear seats rumble you will hear your conscience grumble…
And now the BHA’s letter, along with BRIC’s statement about the series at Pier 1, after the jump.
THURSDAY DANCE PARTIES ON PIER 1
Dear BHA Members and Email Subcribers: The Dear Neighbor letter copied below is from BRIC, who is the sponsor of the Celebrate Brooklyn! Performing Arts Festival that starts tonight on Pier 1. BRIC hopes that many neighbors will want to go down to the Park to dance and join in the fun. There will be amplification, and we wanted you to be aware of that. For more information, please note the email address and website link below.Dear Neighbors:
As Board Chair and Executive Director of http://www.bricartsmedia.org BRIC Arts | Media | Bklyn, we are excited to let you know that BRIC will bring its beloved Celebrate Brooklyn! Performing Arts Festival to Brooklyn Bridge Park on three Thursday evenings this month.
Each of the three Bridge Dance Parties will run from 7 pm to 10 pm, and will be free of charge to the public. Each evening will feature a phenomenal band and a DJ. On May 12, the great Maceo Parker and Brooklyn’s own DJ Spinna will grace our stage; on May 19 we will have an evening of great salsa music from La Excelencia and Que Bajo?! (and a dance instructor for those new to salsa!); and on May 26 we will usher in the first weekend of summer with South Asian Bhangra music by Red Baraat and DJ Rekha, and free Bhangra dance lessons. For more information please visit http://www.bricartsmedia.org/cb bricartsmedia.org/cb.
For over three decades, we have presented outstanding artists in Prospect Park and we are thrilled to bring the same artistically rich programming to another world-class Brooklyn park. We are also pleased to bring dance parties back to the waterfront – about 10 years ago we presented a dance party at Fulton Ferry Landing to help raise awareness of the great potential for a waterfront park. With these Spring events, we are returning to our early connection to the Brooklyn Bridge Park.
Our series is being presented in partnership with Brooklyn Bridge Park. We are also grateful for the support of the Brooklyn Bridge Park Conservancy, our community partner for this series.
We hope you will join us for one or more of these evenings, to celebrate Brooklyn and to celebrate this long-awaited Spring. We also want to acknowledge up front that during the three hour program (and intermittently in the afternoon before the program, as we perform a sound check), the sounds of amplified music will likely be heard in parts of Brooklyn Heights. We assure you that the program will end promptly by 10 pm. If you have any questions or concerns, please let us know via email to Colleen J. Ross, our Director of Marketing and Communications, at mailto:cross@bricartsmedia.org cross@bricartsmedia.org.
Thanks very much and we hope to see you on the Pier 1 Harbor View Lawn!
Regards,
Lizanne Fontaine, Board Chair
