Park Progress Special: Granite Steps at Pier 1 Now Open.

Although the Pier 1 portion of Brooklyn Bridge Park was opened over a month ago, the magnificent granite steps facing the East River and Manhattan, so inviting for sitting and contemplating the view, have been closed to the public until yesterday. (More photos and text following the jump.)

    The steps are a great vantage point in the park. I’m not one to take them for granite. ;-)

    I was going to check them out on Sunday but was with my family. Tough choice–between a rock and a hard place. Ooops–stepped on that one.

    I did happen upon them and was impressed by the view, although after sitting there for a while, I felt like there should be boats races or something to keep us amused.

    The steps were open on Saturday afternoon. Not to age myself too much, but I hope we can keep the skateboarders away from it!

    I took my daughter today and it was glorious. Sky was overcast so it was warm and bright, but the playground wasn’t burning hot. The grass is still fresh and new with no dead patches. Heavenly.

    I really hate that railing across the middle of the steps. I guess it’s some kind of Code compliance thing…

    I wonder what the crowds will be like on July 4th there, especially compared with the Promenade. Banana hammock guy may have to go somewhere else that day.

    jorale-man, the same thought crossed my mind when I was sitting there. They could probably defray 20% of the yearly operating costs by selling reserved seating on those steps for the 4th. Those are some primo spots, but only if the wind is not coming in from the west, in which case it’s a liability suit waiting to happen.

    The fireworks will n ot be on the East River this year. The Hudson won out. A Real bummer.

    Bummer, indeed! So we’ll be lucky to see the tops of a few of the fireworks once again. I wonder if there will be any over the Statue of Liberty at least.
