Markowitz to Endorse Yassky for Comptroller

City Council Member and City Comptroller candidate David Yassky’s campaign office this afternoon issued a press release saying that Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz will join Yassky and his supporters tomorrow at 1:45 P.M. on the steps of City Hall for a “major campaign announcement”. Undoubtedly this means Markowitz is giving his support to Yassky, “the only Brooklynite in the race”.

City Council Candidate Biviano Sets Up Shop at Montague and Hicks

jsw_img_6595
Council candidate and Heights resident Doug Biviano, along with a bevy of helpers, spent yesterday afternoon in front of his soon-to-beherdcampaign headquarters in the former Red Blue Rose space at Montague and Hicks streets, collecting signatures for his petition to be put on the ballot for the 33rd Council District. The colorful, hand-painted seashells on the table, bearing the message “Biv for Brooklyn”, were given to supporters.

There’s more about Biviano here.

City Council Hearing Dock Street Arguments Today

BHB’s Sarah Portlock is on the scene today at the New York City Council Land Use Committee hearing on the Dock Street DUMBO project.

Curbed posts a fascinating “open letter” from Jed Walentas to the celebrity opponents of the project.  It cites “an independent investigation by the Brooklyn Paper” which found “no substantial impact” on public views of the bridge.  Take that, celebrities!

Councilman Yassky’s fierce press machine sent us this quotsky from the meeting:

“The Dock Street proposal would fundamentally alter the enriching experience of the millions of visitors and New Yorkers who come to enjoy one of our nation’s greatest landmarks – the Brooklyn Bridge,” Council Member Yassky said. “Absent a truly diligent site search by the School Construction Authority, Brooklynites are being presented with a false choice between a much-needed school for Downtown Brooklyn and a disastrous development project. Given this moment of economic uncertainty, I urge the Council Land Use Committee to reject this proposal.”

The DUMBO Neighborhood Association press juggernaut has serviced a few clever bon mots from opponents including this from filmmaker Ken Burns that was “entered into the record”:

“In unexpected and wonderful ways, the Brooklyn Bridge captures the essence of the human spirit and it has become an enduring symbol in American culture of strength, vitality, ingenuity and promise. Especially in times like these, NOTHING, literally, should get in the way of that beautiful work of art.”

New Kings on the Block

(BHB/Sarah Portlock)

(BHB/Sarah Portlock)

The seven candidates for City Councilman David Yassky’s 33rd district council seat went head to head on Tuesday night, and the winner? Democracy. There were also a few good laughs, though solely at candidates’ expense.

herd“Let’s do this every Tuesday night,” said candidate Evan Thies, with only a slight glimmer of sarcasm.

The New Kings Democrats hosted the event in Williamsburg, and taped the event to post on its Web site.

Moderators Aaron Short, a reporter and blogger, and Sabrina Gates, a Kings County Democratic County committee member, kept the 90-minute debate snappy and quick and cut the candidates off politely, but forcefully, at their time limit. Whew!

First up, here are highlights from their closing statements, and how they answered the first question, Why are you running?:

Parking permit proposal on table

(BHB/Sarah Portlock)

(BHB/Sarah Portlock)

Brooklyn Heights is not a parking lot — that’s the message elected officials shouted from the steps of Borough Hall on Friday morning.

State Senator Daniel Squadron and Assemblywoman Joan Millman recently introduced joint bills in Albany outlining a proposal to allow residential permit parking in the surrounding neighborhoods, and a who’s who of Brooklyn Heights’ political elite stood behind them to rally support. P.S. 8 Protest Against Teacher Stipend Cuts

United Federation of Teachers reps,  City Councilman David Yassky and others gathered outside P.S. 8 yesterday to voice their support for the Teacher’s Choice Fund.   The $150 stipend it provides teachers allows them to buy classroom supplies.

NY1: “It’s a terrific program and it makes sure that dollars go directly to the classroom, directly where they’re needed,” said City Councilman David Yassky. “The mayor’s budget for this year zeros out the Teachers Choice program, eliminates it completely — not a little cut, not everything’s gotta shrink by a little bit, this gets rid of it completely. We can’t have that.”

The Herd for the 33rd: The Magnificent Sumthin’ Seven

herd
Oy vey!  We have such a headache from trying to remember all the candidates for David Yassky’s New York City Council seat representing the 33rd District.  Perhaps we should give them nicknames?  Nah, too early and just too easy to go the “Snow White” route.  Anywho,  the Herd for the 33rd meet for another debate next week sponsored by the New Kings Democrats.  Based on some reports, the last one can be best described as an Ambien-alternative.

All things considered, who says it’s too early for a poll?  Vote after the jump. Continue Reading →

Finksky Introskys Yassky at Blogfest 2009sky

The 2009 Brooklyn Blogfest was held last night at Powerhouse Arena in DUMBO.  Uber-bloggers Brownstoner and Gothamist were on hand in addition to about 300 others.    The two take-aways from the Fest panel came from pro-blogger Jake Dobkin of Gothamist: 1)blogging professionally is like having sex for money and 2) If you’re just blogging about yourself all the time there’s no point. Write about a topic you’re interested in and collaborate with others. He added, “there only needs to be one Brooklyn Heights Blog.”  Check out the discussion of Blogfest on Twitter.

But the “fun” really kicked in at the Galapagos Art Space after-party.  During the blogger “shout out” I found myself in line ahead of our man in the City Council/ NYC Comptroller candidate David Yassky.   After being introduced by attorney/contributor/local blogger Claude Scales, I identified myself and said to the somewhat indifferent crowd, “it’s my pleasuresky to introdusky our man in the City Councilsky, Mr. David Yassky.”  (Apparently, Yassky has no problemsky with our predilectionsky for adding “sky” at the endsky of all our reportingsky about himsky.)

Yassky: Fireworks Should Stay Putsky… Sortasky

In light of Macy’s recent announcement that it plans to move its annual Fourth of July fireworks display from the East River to the Hudson, our man in the NYC Council/comptroller candidate David Yassky has issued this missive:

“The annual Fourth of July fireworks show on the East River and over the internationally-recognized Brooklyn Bridge is one of our City’s greatest spectacles. Moving the show to New Jersey would negatively impact thousands of tourists and residents who come to Manhattan and Brooklyn to enjoy the show, and the countless local business that stand to benefit from the event. I urge Macy’s to split the show so that Brooklyn residents are not robbed of this important tradition and influx of economic activity during this moment of economic uncertainty.”

City Council candidate debate round-up

(BHB/Sarah Portlock)

(BHB/Sarah Portlock)

Monday night’s debate between six (of the seven) candidates running for City Councilman David Yassky’s seat (which may or may not be vacated) was, to be blunt, long and routine. To their credit, moderators Kenn Lowy and Lucy Koteen kept things rapid-fire, pushing the candidates to answer questions in two minutes, then one, and then 30 seconds.

The Brooklyn Paper‘s Politicrasher has a snarky take on the night, and news blogger Aaron Short, who focuses on the northern stretches of the district, has his own breezy version.

The Central Brooklyn Independent Democrats and the Independent Neighborhood Democrats hosted the evening at St. Francis College. On Thursday night, CBID will hold its endorsement meeting for the 33rd District seat.

But since there were actual topics discussed here and only about 100 people came out in the pouring rain, BHB will dissect how the night played out:
