SummerSpace on Montague This Sunday and Next

This Sunday, September 15 and the following Sunday, September 22, from noon to 5:00 p.m., the Montague Street BID will present its fifth annual SummerSpace event. The street will be closed to traffic between Clinton and Henry streets and between Henry and Hicks, to accommodate a number of free outdoor events (see more info here). There will be activities for kids, some restaurants will offer free food samples, and some merchants on the street will have special promotions. The BHB crew plans to be there this Sunday (the 15th) to meet and greet readers, and don’t forget the Brooklyn Heights Association’s Dog Show the following Sunday (September 22).

    The event was agreeable except for one thing: every year the BID insists on hiring that pot-addled son of the owner of James Weir florist to play appalling music with the same dreary bass line at deafening volume, music more suitable to a Tampa disco than to an outdoor fete where people want to stroll and chat and eat. Last year I asked him very politely to play the music less loudly and he pointedly ignored me. Does the BID imagine that the music Rasta man with the blond dreadlocks plays is cool and hip? If so, how little they know.

    What’s with all the hate for poor Tampa? As a former Tampan–yes, some of my old friends have taken to the absurd construction “Tampanian” because Tampan sounds like, well, something else; but I say, heck, we can absorb it–I can say that it’s a place not wanting for charm and cul-cha. Nothing to hold a candle to New York, to be sure; that’s why I’m here, not there. Still, it’s a place to which I enjoy returning for a visit now and then.
