Upcoming BQE Lane Closures For Rehab Work

The New York City Department of Transportation has announced that the Queens bound lanes of the Brookyn-Queens Expressway will be closed between Atlantic Avenue and Sands Street from early morning Saturday, April 13 to early morning Monday, April 15 to accommodate repair work. During that weekend expect much more traffic on our principal southbound thoroughfare, Hicks Street, and likely more on Clinton Street.

Does anyone doubt that whatever the risks – short-term and other – of a serious incident involving the portion of the BQE nearest us were PRE-TODAY-FRI-Apr-5, the earthquake of about 90 minutes ago simply must have increased that risk?!

Who doesn’t get it that if you shake something that’s already something less than holding up well 75 years after being built … with traffic by weight of vehicles per day up 5x in that timespan, there’s a serious chance of a crack here and a separation there?!

Will they inspect simultaneous with the planned work next weekend? Or will they postpone the work in favor of however they do inspections, so as to see if the work they had planned is still their most logical way to proceed?
