Joralemon from Hicks to Furman Closed Tomorow Evening

As part of the City’s “Trick or Streets” program, in partnership with the Willowtown Association, tomorrow (Monday, October 31; Halloween) from 4:00 to 8:00 PM Joralemon Street between Hicks and Furman streets will be closed to vehicular traffic.

Kudos to the city for the program but what are the details? That stretch of Joralemon is already an “open street” — but the ‘limited local access’ type, which in practice means most cars drive down anyway. Will this really be car-free tonight?

And why didn’t the city incorporate the other block of Joralemon from Henry to Hicks (and similar block of State) around Garden Place? The NYPD itself formally closes these off, much more than the volunteer effort in Willowtown. Weird.

FYI, when I went by the entrance to Joralemon from Hicks last night around 7pm, cars were driving freely down the block (turning left from Hicks). The metal barrier that’s sometimes there was pushed aside and didn’t see any volunteers closing the street. Like other Halloweens, NYPD had patrol cars blocking the entrance to Joralemon at Henry, and the entrance to State at Hicks.
