American-born British singer Scott Walker died last week. He had a song called Montague Terrace (In Blue).

Thanks for bringing this to my attention. Love the arrangements! Beautiful writing.

Here’s my slightly revised—to increase contrast when printing on a monotone or laser printer—version of the poster promoting the April 3rd BQE Town Hall. Click on it to get the full size version, and print copies yourself:

Only 2 more photos to be posted. Courtesy the Municipal Archives, here’s the Consolidated Taxpayers Mutual Insurance Company Building, listed as 137 Remsen Street—now the addition to Packer Collegiate—in 1940:

Whoever winds up “filling Peter Bray’s shoes” will have one heck of an interesting job “in the short term,” and I could even seeing the right “younger person” settling in (at the BHA) for quite a long time.

However, it’s probably not the easiest job to fill – I ran it by 2 friends/acquaintances. Neither “bit,” but I’d like to think that there are BHB readers with much wider and more talented circles of friends than I have.

Please, “rack your brains” – yes, a good man or woman may be hard to find here, but one of you could do both some individual and the BHA and lovely B.H. one heck of a good turn!!

The Packer school has done a fairly good job restoring the facade, IMO. Interesting that 150 Joralemon was also an insurance building at one time. Clinton St. must have been insurance row.

New sign on the NE corner of Montague and Hicks: “NO THRU TRUCK TRAFFIC”. Was that up there before and just knocked down, or is this new? Either way, I like it!

  • Clara West

If the same sign that was up in 2014 per Street View, sure has been effective!

  • Blake Stevens

Hi – does anyone have a contact number or email address to complain about the non-stop movie crews that have invaded the North BH? I have an idling truck for hours outside my property, noise as well as water issues all as a result. Many thx

Seems like another case of “not prosecuting, but not exonerating”…

  • Banet

A DOT sign guy was working in the neighborhood today. I watched him put up a few new ones.

  • Kit

Probably the best you can do is call 311.

  • Reggie

The signs that hold the parking often have a telephone number for the locations department. I would start there and if the production company isn’t responsive, then call 311.

  • willow

I called 311 Wednesday night and they had me leave a voicemail with the Mayor’s Office of Media and Entertainment.

  • Bornhere

A few months ago, I asked that a sign be placed on Henry at Remsen, in the hope it might cut down on the endless nighttime truck noise and the private carting cowboys, who love to turn east (!) on Joralemon. Within two months of my request, a sign was placed! And it makes zero difference :)

What is going on in the marina? There are multiple barges, divers, people working above ground, cranes, etc. Anyone have any clue?

  • Local_Montague_Man

went back and checked streetview. no sign there from 2017. so i think it is new. probably will not make a difference

  • Still Here

They are upgrading the wave attenuators to calm the marina floating docks.

  • Local_Montague_Man

Thank you. Seems like they made a mistake the first time around? Private funding?

  • Banet

100% private funding. No park dollars or public dollars involved. Indeed, they screwed up. The attenuation they installed attenuates the “short waves” which create the “chop” but not the long waves, which create the serious rocking.

What was the acrid smoke hat blanketed the North Heights Monday night?

  • MaggieO

maybe still from the forest fires in Jersey?

  • Reggie

From Notify NYC: “Notification issued 04-01-2019 at 11:48 PM. Emergency personnel are on the scene of a compactor fire located at Sands Street and York Street in Brooklyn. Expect smoke, traffic delays, and a presence of emergency personnel and vehicles in the area. The NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene advises….”

I’d stick with either the full name (The Packer Collegiate Institute) or the short name (Packer). This “Packer Collegiate” business seems to have started in the late 1970s when the school went co-ed, and I always thought it was some publicity type’s idea to make the place sound more masculine by adding “Collegiate.” You know, like the UWS boys’ school.

And it isn’t the Packer School either.

That said, I understand there might be plans to build further into the garden. Not a good idea.

Just the north Heights? There was a smoke stench that wafted all the way from Ditmas Park to ato Sheepshead Bay and for all I know farther afield than that. —

But to me it smelled like an incinerator.

  • Andrew Porter

I hear the trucks turning onto my street at 4am.

The reason garbage truck brakes squeal now is that they used to have asbestos in the brake linings, but no longer.

  • Andrew Porter

Thanks. I guess that’s the right direction. The stench couldn’t be explained by brush and woods burning in NJ.

  • Andrew Porter

But of course there are no more building incinerators in NYC. I just Googled “incinerators NYC” and there are none operating here.
