Here’s 13 Henry Street in 1940. Everything on the east side up to Clark was torn down by Robert Moses, destroyer of worlds. Photo courtesy the Municipal Archives:

In light of the ongoing BQE debate, some appropriate reminders of the reckless destruction that can be done to neighborhoods by city planners.

Time to take the Christmas crap down.

  • http://selfabsorbedboomer.blogspot.com/ Claude Scales

On the liturgical calendar, Christmas lasts until Epiphany, which is this coming Sunday, January 6.

  • Herman on Henry

Nobody cares about those irrelevant facts. Christmas is over and time to take the decorative crap down.

  • Jorale-man

I always leave mine up until sometime in the second week of January. A little festiveness goes a long way in this gray time of year.

    Bah Humbug!

Would be awesome for you to start your own blog Andrew….seeing all these pictures cluttering up the comments section is getting annoying!

  • Andrew Porter

The comments section? This entire thing is comments!

Great photo off my TV showing Willow Street masquerading as Washington DC in the film The Post:

I’d rather see the pictures than your insightful comments!!! Respectfully.

  • DIBS

Didn’t get what you want this year???

  • W.R.

    Me too! Keep posting!

  • Brooklynite

And if you are Eastern Orthodox Christian, you don’t celebrate Christmas until January 7th

  • Herman on Henry

I hate everything about Christmas and the best part about it is when it’s over. I particularly hate looking at Christmas crap anytime after December 26th. So take down all the Christmas crap.

  • AndyHeights

I totally disagree! I look forward to these pics of Old Brooklyn Heights each week. Please keep posting them Andrew!!!

  • Jean

love Xmas as most do. Keeping them up until mid January. Too bad Scrooge!

  • Eddyde

Google “video Christmas tree fire” You might rethink that tradition.

  • Eddyde

I thought the the East side of Henry North of Clark was torn down in 60’s to make way for the Cadman high-rises, was that a Robert Moses project?

  • Jorale-man

Yes, I switched to LED lights recently, which don’t get hot or overload outlets. They aren’t as bright either but the electrical savings are nice.

  • MaggieO

looks like a combination of Moses and general “urban renewal” https://www.nycurbanism.com/brutalnyc/2017/2/1/cadman-towers
the blocks those towers occupy were carved out as urban renewal areas before the historic district was created so they were easily condemned.

Here’s a vertical photo from the early 1960s showing that a lot of the older buildings hadn’t been torn down yet. Click on photo to see it at full size (958k):

I also disagree. I love the old pictures, too.

Keep up the good work. Love these pictures.

Looks like BHA and Better Way about to play hard ball. Fund raiser at Heights Casino scheduled for Jan. 11. Article in Brooklyn Eagle.

My mom used to tell me that, when she was a tot, there were candles on her tree; when I was a tot, we used those magnificent C7s, which were hot enough to seriously burn your arm, while reaching to straighten an ornament. We tried LEDs, but, as colorful as they are, they give off no actual “light.” So it’s the old-school (but not THAT old) mini lights, twinkling away. UNTIL January 6 :)
