Open Thread Wednesday

120.jpgAnother week, another open thread.  Talk about anything including:

Renovation of 135 Joralemon – anyone have news?

Happy Valentine's Day! Are you planning to spend it at one of the nabe's fine eateries or somewhere else?

Marty Markowitz for Mayor?

Are Brooklyn streets that dangerous — and does it really matter if you're wearing in iPod?

Any other nabe signs hurting  your eyes?

And where are the Goggle Brothers?

The Goggles were out on Saturday, probably doing their weekly errands (!), coming down Hicks towards Joralemon. They were carrying their usual Duane Reade bags and were arguing.

I walked by 135 Joralemon yesterday and was delighted to see it looking very good: exterior wood and metalwork all restored or replaced and freshly painted. About an hour later, on my walk home, I was aghast to see a fire engine parked in front of it, with lights flashing. However, the house looked as good as earlier, and no smoke was coming from it. Evidently, whatever the fire department had been summoned for was in the apartment building next door.

As for garish signs, can anyone remember “Hot Bird” when it was at Montague and Henry?

Those “Hot Bird” wall advertisements totally crack me up:

Just to open a new kettle of fish…

Has anyone else seen this elderly woman on the 2/3 who brings her own chair and just sits right down in the middle of the car and starts doing crossword puzzles totally oblivious to all?

At first I thought she was in a wheelchair but I don’t think so. If she is, forget I said anything.

But assuming she’s not, I don’t know whether to tip my cap to her flat-out in-your-face NY chutzpah, or push her over for being so friggin’ obnoxious.

Can we get a consensus? Or some enlightenment?

2 – the florist on atlantic bet henry and hick tried to gouge me, asking $100 for flowers today … so i went up to montague instead

3 – a man collapsed and died last week in front of 175 clinton street. a couple people who saw it said it was very sad. anyone know any more about this?

Tim, around what time is she there? I don’t think I’ve seen that yet.

Have you guys ever seen the old blind man that plays the accordion walking through the 4/5 trains? He’s good…i think…i can’t tell what “good” accordion playing sounds like…

The man who died of a massive heart attack near Atlantic and Clinton was William W. Caldwell, III, a Heights resident who was in his mid 40s and leaves a wife and two young daughters. His funeral service was today at Grace Church.

    Very sad indeed.

Correction: Mr. Caldwell was a Cobble Hill resident.

RIP, Aficionada. We hardly knew ye.

Seen on Montague Street yesterday: hanging from the railing of a front stoop, encased in a Ziplock bag, was a printed piece of paper, with the headline

    ** THIEVES TAKE NOTICE **

Thinking I had discovered an 18th century broadside proclaiming that the King is in need of men of questionable morals and character to embark upon a voyage to put down rebellion in far-off colonies, I read on, but was disappointed:

“IF YOU ARE THE PERSON(S) WHO STOLE TWO CHILDREN’S RAZOR SCOOTERS FROM THIS LOCATION ON SUNDAY AFTERNOON AT 1:30PM BE COMFORTED THAT YOU HAVE BROKEN THE HEARTS OF MY FIVE-YEAR OLD DAUGHTER AND THREE-YEAR OLD SON.

ENJOY THEM WHILE YOU HAVE THEM AS THEY ARE UNIQUE AND IF I FIND THEM I WILL PROSECUTE TO THE FULLEST EXTENT OF THE LAW.”

Poor kids…on top of everything else, they’re going to be raised to eliminate commas and the second hyphen from “five-year-old.”

On another topic, who remembers the old man who used to sell flowers from a freakin’ horsedrawn cart in the 1980’s? No kidding, an honest-to-goodness horsedrawn peddling cart! He used to set up on Joralemon St. near Henry St. a lot.

For some reason, I think he used to have a stable in Cobble Hill off of Clinton St.

    Hey, all…

Adding to the chutspah vs. galling aspect, I’ve only seen her in rush hours.

  • Teddy

Yeah, I remember him. I think he died.
