Old issue but who do we complain to about the helicopter noise coming from Lower Manhattan? Just awful this morning..

  • tina

it’s every single morning lately. and evening. i feel like i’m going crazy/living in a military zone…

  • Mary

I’m guessing it was a Fleet Week event. But it was too early and too loud. Scary. Doesn’t anyone in City Hall remember 9/11?

  • Mary

Also, our Sunday furlough from choppers may be in jeopardy. The copter company is hoping to buy land in Yonkers and run flights down river and from the downtown heliport(!) I contacted Mayor Mike Spano. He’s against the sale and has sent a bill to his City Council to ban helicopters in Yonkers.

I don’t see the story on StoptheChop’s website yet, but here’s their link:

I agree! I woke up with a roaring headache and there was nothing to be done about the persistent, obtrusive sound of the helicopter racket! What on EARTH was the reason? Does anybody have an answer?

On the brighter side, the garden at Bridge Harbor Heights on Poplar Street is in near full bloom. Probably the most diverse private garden in the City, it has been certified by the National Wildlife Federation as a wildlife habitat. Occasionally you will find someone working in the garden; stop and ask for a tour.

I was walking through the park at around 7 this morning, and there was a huge black helicopter hovering in the harbor for a while, then it landed on the southernmost helipad and hung out there for at least 20 minutes, engines on. It was still there when I left the park.

Ordinarily, I can sleep through almost any rocket, but the helicopter noise this morning actually woke me up at approximately 6:15 a.m.. Definitely way too early…!

  • Concerned

I saw and heard this, as well. It was extremely loud and just sat there on the helipad with its engines on. I can only assume that the helicopter was very powerful. I also wonder if the proximity to the buildings in Manhattan created more of an echo to bounce the sound into our neighborhood.

Even if it was associated with Fleet Week, it is still not right to keep the engines running for so long after it landed. So inconsiderate to wake up huge numbers of people on BOTH sides of the river, as it had to be incredibly noisy for people living in lower Manhattan, too.

The info was just sent out via letter– we need to update the website. Thanks!

If you’re talking about the helitours, here: http://www.stopthechopnynj.org/how-you-can-help.html Also, 311 complaints, since apparently that’s all the EDC thinks are “legitimate” complaints.

Major police activity at pier 2 at around 6 pm, today. I’m not sure if this is the new look of security or if something happened, but there’s 10 police vehicles, blockades and many police officers active.

  • BananaWednesday

Anyone know if Pier 5/6 will have any of the Fleet Week ships docked?

  • mlcraryville

What is about ten basketball hoops that drive young men crazy??

  • Diesel

Just back from a stroll on the nod, looks like Pier 2 is shut down again…

  • Elaine Rendon

You’ll have to travel to Red Hook to see and board any ships. But I’ve seen dozens of service members around the neighborhood since 2pm today

  • gc

Anyone know what happened to all the sail club sailboats that were docked down at pier 5? There were about 20 of them and they have totally disappeared.

  • gc

No point in complaining. It can’t be more obvious that no one in power cares about pretty much any of our complaints.

  • http://selfabsorbedboomer.blogspot.com/ Claude Scales

The last time I looked, some were anchored between Piers 5 and 6. There’s still work to be done on the marina. Docks have yet to be installed on the outer piers.

  • ColumbiaHeightster

It was coming from lower Manhattan.

  • HenryonHenry

Anyone find out what happened at Pier 2 the other day?

If you read the reports, no one was “driven crazy.” No one even mentioned the sex of the people involved. Please consider getting facts before you make assumptions about people’s behavior.

  • mlcraryville

And what are the facts except that one of the frequent sites of shootings and, by extension, similar violent behaviors in the USA, is at “basketball tournaments.”

  • HistoryBuff

Note on Tuesday, June 7 there will be a meeting of the Brooklyn Bridge Park Corporation to vote on the Pier 6 development project.

The first of the Atlantic Cup competitors has arrived at Pier 5, the finish line for the second leg of the race. Congratulations to Tales II of Spain!
