Coming Up at Brooklyn Bridge Park

This week’s Wednesday Night Tour has been moved to Thursday evening, October 15. The topic is “Bringing the Park to Life”, and it will be conducted by Regina Myer, President of the Brooklyn Bridge Park Corporation, who will tell “the story of Brooklyn Bridge Park’s creation and innovative approach to revitalizing urban spaces” while showing some of the results of that revitalization. This week the tour is free, but you must RSVP here. As usual, the tour will begin at the entrance to Pier 1 at 6:30 p.m.

Also on Thursday evening there will be a New York Road Runners Open Run starting at Fornino, near the Pier 6 entrance, with check in at 6:45 and the run starting at 7:00. These will be happening every Thursday evening. More information here.

Looking ahead to next Saturday, October 17, the Park will have a Family Volunteer Day:

Bring the whole family for a day of hands-on volunteer activities in the park! Families will work on kid-friendly horticultural tasks to ensure that the park remains beautiful, clean and green.

There’s more information here.

That first event should be quite an exercise in spin. I wonder how many takers they can get to buy into their story by this point.

Thanks so much for the reminder about Thursday’s NYRR open run. I’m glad to see a BBP group is getting started. I’ll be there.

    Boo park.

Re: the NYRR open run, does anyone know how long of a run this is, or have any details of the route? Thanks.

    Excuse me while I vomit…

Actually, the best thing is if a mob of real Heights residents show up to ask/shout a few “questions” at darling Regina. I’m up for that..anyone want to go there?

  • RJG

I posted a question in the FB group and will pass on the details when there’s a reply.

Let it go already. The Park ia here and the buildings are under construction. That area doesn’t belong to a select few Heights residents

Here’s a great shot of Brooklyn Bridge Park just nanoseconds before it, and we, are vaporized by an IS dirty bomb (art by Chesley Bonestell):

That’s a wonderful name from my youth. Chesley Bonestell was by FAR the most celebrated science fiction themes illustrator prior to 1965.

My parents found there was Chesley Bonestell wallpaper(!) And they covered my bedroom with views of Luna landscapes and realistic (at the time) space vehicles. This blew the minds of all the other kids in my area and a LOT of adults…

Allowing my first look at my “new” room, I asked my parents where exactly was it that Alice Kramden landed…

    Thanks!

Why does this news not surprise me?

Here’s a glass dome over lower Manhattan to protect it from the IS bomb (art by Craig Mullins). I guess Brooklyn is screwed.

“….We’ll be starting by Fornino on Pier 6, running straight north to Pier 1, then looping around the open piers back down to Fornino. Right now we’re looking at a distance of about 2.5 miles, but it will probably be increased to a full 5K in the spring.”

Ugh, that looks more like a big rock at the bottom of some lake or, more likely, a proposed new building down at Regina’s park.

Actually, the classic science fiction era had Another superstar illustrator; Alex Schomberg. His SF Collage is one of the really great images of the pre 1965 era. Besides the Chesley Bonestall wallpaper, my parents had a blow up of his collage minus the huge face, the art filled one smaller wall surface leading to my bath. This further fish eyed my friends and caused friends parents to wonderfully voice their disapprovals to my parents. I always wanted at 9 or 10, to have both the Ford’s FX Atmos AND their La Tosca to drive around the Heights.

Today, I think of those great times, back in the USA, and I simply punch up “Don’t mess me off” by The Move (the greatest Elvis record…wasn’t made by Elvis!)
