Parakeet Found on College Place; Owner Sought

Word has come from Judy Stanton at the Brooklyn Heights Association that the young male parakeet in the photo (sorry for the fuzzy quality) flew into the window of a resident of 9 College Place and is being kept there in hope that its owner will come and claim it. Judy thinks the bird may have come from one of the Mansion House apartments on Hicks, as they share a back yard with College Place.

How can you distinguish pet parakeets from the feral ones in Brooklyn?

  • ClaudeScales

I’m not sure, but I suspect a feral bird wouldn’t fly into an apartment.

I’ve heard or seen occasional reports of feral parakeets in Brooklyn (Prospect Park, I think), but not lately. Is it known that there are such?

  • GHB

Yes, there are several flocks in Brooklyn, including one in Green-Wood Cemetery.

May I draw your attention to A.M. Juster’s wonderful sonnet, “Los Periquitos”?

Those are monk parakeets and they are an invasive species. They are noisy green birds. And will never fly into a home.
