Brooklyn Heights Man Has Had It With Henry Street Gristedes

Today, BHB was pinged by Twitter user Jeremy Greenfield. He’s fed up with the Henry Street (technically 101 Clark Street) Gristedes. Heck, who isn’t?

What we’ve found over the years of cultivating a hate-on for the place is that the staff is dedicated and hard working but the ownership is perfectly content squeezing every possible nickel out of Brooklyn Heights residents. Because, capitalism. Heck, the dude who owns the chain is still trying to sell bottles of water from his failed mayoral campaign. For two bucks more than at his other stores. (Note that when we compared them to Fresh Direct, we were surprised.)

And folks, FIRE COULDN’T DRIVE THEM AWAY. But what do you think? And is lining up at Trader Joe’s like it’s Soviet Russia really a better bet?

Comment away!

I really love Brooklyn Fare. It’s just off the Hoyt/Schermerhorn station on the A/C. Instead of going to Gristedes, I take the train 2 stops to have a MUCH better experience.

I supplement that with trips to Sahadi’s and Trader Joe’s.

Bring back the Daniel Reeves chain.

Civized, dignified treatment of the shopping public..wait, I’m sorry I forgot, that’s illegal now…

I refuse to shop at Greededes on principle. I’ve never seen a product, on sale or not in that store that was reasonably priced. Everything is always at least a dollar more than all other stores around. Key Food is better and cleaner and I will walk there which is a 10 min walk for me even though Greededes is around the corner.

Gristede’s is around the corner from you, but it takes 10 minutes to walk to Key Foods? What are you, 100?

  • Remsen Street Dweller

    What are you, nasty?

  • TeddyNYC

Yeah, even the occasional line just to get in.

Just my personal take on food shopping options….

There is no doubt that one would be hard pressed to find a fair price for anything at Gristedes. This is a marketing mistake from an ownership way past any creative period. And, I cannot understand why anyone would shop at Trader Joe’s.The quality of “fresh food” there is poor. They don’t gouge on prices gouge like Gristedes for most shelf commodities, but that is no reason to shop at a basically mediocre market. It is also a small portion set up, so families should look elsewhere to shop. The Key Food on Atlantic seems to be managed well and you can get some quality there, as you can at Garden of Eden. Ever since Fairway was taken over, I’ve noticed a gradual loss of store personality, focus and higher prices; it is still not a bad place to market. That leaves Whole Foods. The store is jammed on weekends for a reason: quality is very high (as our most prices) and there are some things they hold the prices down on, like chicken. Service is first rate. But it is not convenient for folks who cannot drive, and again, it is not where lower income folks can find gastronomical solace.

I don’t get me started on Fresh Direct. It is a loathsome company; and for those who can get there, Costco is quite good for most needs.

For older folks with limited mobility, and busy working families, the north Heights and Dumbo are really stuck with bad players like Gristedes. Ethnically mixed neighborhoods as found in Queens have good shopping large and small stores. Just take the train to the Roosevelt Avenue station and outside you will find a dazzling array of marketing options: Indian, Chinese, Mexican, Colombian etc., some of very good quality.

In the end, Gristedes will not change. It cannot with current ownership and a location where one cannot pull up a car and load in groceries. It could find a middle ground, but chooses not to. We are stuck with a business on the corner of Henry and Clark that we need, but seems not to need us. It is content selling old water with the image of a fat man who wanted to be mayor.

Republicans like you would charge us to breathe, if you could get away with it!

  • lazy panda

The inside scoop is that Gristedes is consistantly overdue with their rent bill and doesnt pay its late fees either.

  • ShinyNewHandle

To whom/what does Gristedes’ rent go (if you know)? Just curious.

After the renovation I bought a box of Familia at Gristedes. When I got home I saw that I was charged $12! it was $8 dollars at Peas and Pickles next door. I actually went back and had them give me $4 to make a point.Everything is overpriced. Never go there now even though I am 2 blocks away. Something is terribly wrong when a Korean market is cheaper than a supermarket.
