Reader Report: “Gangs of Men” Vandalizing CitiBikes Saturday Night

A reader just tweeted us alleging that “gangs of men” were vandalizing CitiBikes along Columnbia Heights tonight (9/6) around 10PM.

DEVELOPING…

Earlier today BHB SuperCommenter David on Middagh said:

Today I yelled at a kid kicking Citibike tires—trying to dislodge any poorly docked bicycle for a joy ride. His friend already had one and rode it down the Columbia Heights hill. I wonder if they would have been so brazen if the food-cart vendor had been there. (No, I didn’t see a policeman or have a phone with me.)

In light of the Hicks Street incident earlier this summer and the random acts of violence against CitiBikes, it’s time for those who usually don’t attend meetings with the 84th to do so. The next meeting of the 84th Precinct Community Council will be on September 16 (location TBD). Community Board 2 will have representatives from the 84th at its Monday, October 6 meeting at Ingersoll Community Center, 177 Myrtle Avenue at Prince Street at 6pm.

If it pleases you that I do then sure. Just for you spunky.

  • petercow

Monroe – there are new memberships, and attrition all the time.

  • petercow

I don’t use the S.I. Ferry either. I support it.

  • petercow

As I stated above, – there are new enrollments every day, and attrition every day too.

Citibike already has ridership in 1 year that it took the London system, about 3 years to reach.

  • petercow

Just looked at some data. On May 1st, there were 26,762 riders of Citibike.

    93% were Annual subscribers.

  • petercow

I happened to meet someone from Citibank. They -love- Citibike. They get constant demands for them in movies, tv, etc..

In the UES near my office bike
    Station were placed…then…a
number of our firm’s made some
    Calls..the stations were gone in
A week!!! The issue of violent
Crime is a BIG consideration now
    Make no mistake..the “changes”
    In the areas surrounding the
    Heights are having their effects,
The park is a major new burden
    on public safety resources..we
HAVE to be very careful now…

  • petercow

Cindy – have you changed your meds lately?

  • cindy s

Whenever some NGO type or one of
Their boosters can’t speak to an issue
    they resort to personal abuse…Its
Very simple; given all the mounting
    Serious Indications, is it reasonable
To continue what we are doing or
    Should we redirect our resources
    Into better public safety?

You have a point, the Brooklyn BridgePark and the housing development within will have an impact on the civil infrastructure of the surrounding neighborhoods…. but what does that have to do with Citibike?

  • petercow

Yes – do I want cops to act as guards for automobiles parked on the street, or flower pots that are left out in the open and unattended?

Guess we all must be naive idiots. Or maybe, just you.

  • petercow

    “Gangs” is racially biased? WTF?!

  • Derick

Guess you are, petercow, since you want to waste valuable city resources on nonsense like this. Hire private security, or do what they do in less affluent nabes – set up a neighborhood watch and volunteer to work it. I resent having my tax dollars protecting CitiBikess or any other irresponsible enterprise.

Oh poor Mr. Crusty… you must not be aging well as your arguments are becoming more and more asinine! So you are blaming Sandy for Citibikes failures? Sandy had nothing to do with this. The reason citibike is failing is bc less than half the annual members rejoined…successful? i think not.

and im glad less people were injured than i predicted. doesnt change the fact that this program is not financially sustainable.

  • MonroeOrange

Did the London system need a bailout within a year of their opening. Seems odd that we have 3 times the ridership yet can’t sustain the program without a bailout…..

  • Eddyde

    Cheapskate

  • Joe A

You didn’t know they had $10M in damage due to Sandy flooding their Brooklyn Warehouse? Their membership has grown faster than any other bike share program in the world. Some annual subscribers will renew and others will not. This is surprising to you?

Get used to it spunky the bright blue citibike is part of the NYC landscape and will be for a long long time.
