German Ship Resupplies at Pier 7

Looking like an episode of Victory at Sea, the above was spotted this morning by readers Gracie Court Tipster and OBB. Since many of the maritime vessels in the area tend to be sailboats or kayaks, this one really made a splash. Careful Googling of the number on the side revealed it is German supply ship BONN A1413. Seen any sailor on Montague St?

That ship has been there for almost 2 weeks now. The cobble hill blog had already reported on it.

As a matter of fact that ship has already sailed!

    Scooped by Claude!

Who took this photo? It’s very painterly.

That would explain the ship’s horn I heard a little before 1pm today. I saw a couple of female officers in uniform on Atlantic Ave. last week. They were in a hurry to get back to the vessel. In 2009, the Bonn’s sister vessel, Frankfurt am Main (A1412), visited us.

A week ago I saw two sailors, resplendent in long dark coats with insignia on the left breast, striding northward on Henry Street just south of Clark.

That ship was here for over a week and has already left. Way to be current BHB. How could you have not reported this? A German navy vessel docked in the neighborhood is less important than the best burger in the Heights story? Jeez.

    Don’t mention the war.

    Ah, Das Boot!

    You’re correct, Mr. Fawlty!!

That’s a submarine reference—the movie, and the way submarine are commonly called “boats”, as in Electric Boat, the submarine manufacturing facility at New London, Connecticut.

The ship is, indeed, past history. Sailors in uniform were heading to the TD Bank at the corner Montague & Court on Saturday the week before last.

So you are saying WW II era German submarines were made in New London Connecticut?

  • Andrew Porter

Actually, Homer makes submarines in his house. He just can’t figure out how to get them out the front door.
