Fireworks Tonight!

We have this announcement from Notify NYC:

Notification issued 10/5/13 at 4:00 PM. There will be a fireworks display off of Pier 16, in the East River near the South Street Seaport in Manhattan tomorrow, 10/6/13, at approximately 7:20 PM.

“[O]ff of Pier 16″ means directly in front of the North Heights, so the display will be easily visible from the Promenade and from Pier 1, Brooklyn Bridge Park. It should be easily heard throughout the Heights, Cobble Hill, and DUMBO.

“Off of” — where did this person take his/her English lessons. Only one of those words is necessary: “Off Pier 6″ is adequate and gives the location correctly and properly.

  • David on Middagh

Lydia—you can embed a proper em dash (instead of slumming it with the double hyphen) by holding down the Alt key while typing 0151 on the numeric keypad (numlocked, off course). There are other ways—if you are using a system on which that combination isn’t workable—including copy/pasting from another source.

As a fellow finicky person, I just *know* you wanted to know this!

David, you’re quite right; when it comes to the English language, I can be quite finicky, being a retired teacher. Thanks for the tip on em dashes, but it didn’t work for me. I’ll keep trying.

Okay … but what was the occasion?

  • Cranberry Beret

They were awesome! Right between Cranberry and Middagh

Diwali, the Indian Festival of Lights. Notify NYC didn’t include this information, but it’s in some of the tweets in the right hand column.

  • Heightsman

Which is interesting because Diwali is November 3rd.

One of the tweeters noted that it’s next month. I’m guessing the fireworks were scheduled early for a better chance of good weather.

I always miss the fireworks. I bet they were amazing in the fog. Anyone have photos?
