Hey MonroeOrange, et al, City Bike just past one million miles traveled, in less than one month!

Actually, there has been more support here than hate.

Not sure if it’s temporary but last night I drove by Hicks and Montague and that Citibike Station was gone! I hated that station for stealing legal alternate side parking spots when it could easily have taken up meter spots on Montague. Maybe someone listened to me! I purposefully never docked or took out from that station as a form of mini-protest.

  • PB

Alec, hate to disappoint you but it was removed because they’re milling down Hicks Street over the next few days in preparation for repaving. The station will undoubtedly be back in a few days.

As far as location, I think it makes more sense to use alternate side spaces instead of metered ones. There are hundreds and hundreds of alternate side spaces in the neighborhood but very few meters.

That said, I think the bets location is the original one — behind the Bossert. They moved it because it came too close to the brownstones just past the Bossert but maybe they could put it back there and just shorten it a bit? (Which would be a new problem in that this station is frequently completely full or empty — so shortening it would create more shortages).

  • Alec

Noooo!!! Here I thought my protest was working. But for meter v alternate side spot, I’d say the meter spots are much less useful to local car owners, so i’d rather see them used up before alternate side is taken – but we can certainly agree that stations that don’t take either (like behind the Bossert) are the best option.

  • PB

Yeah, but it’s not just about local car owners, is it? The neighborhood also has to account for the needs of the local business owners and I expect some of them have need for an occasional metered spot.

Personally, I can only think of one personal need for a metered spot on Montague — that’s dropping off a big load of donations at Housing Works. But off the top of my head?

Someone might want to drive home a few heavy sacks of dog food or cat litter from Sammy’s pet store. Or someone might have a huge pile of woolens to drop off at one of the many dry cleaners for winter storage. Or… hmm. That’s about all I can come up with. Maybe we need fewer metered spots. ;-)

just admit this program is a disaster of epic proportions; all nyc lawyers are wringing their hands @ the prospect of much more business!

  • MonroeBlue

don’t forget about the RATS!!!! These fury friends are now immune to all types of poisons……. Thanx to this particular eyesore!

  • Andrew Porter

The Titanic, and 9/11 were “disasters of epic proportions”. The bike share is a minor footnote in the overall scene of things. Get a life!

I was working on the West Coast on the months leading up to Bike Share launch so I missed most of the hub bub and didn’t really have strong feelings either way. Iam not really a biker or a bike advocate. Nor do I dislike bikers. I never really biked in the city since I had my bike stolen in college. I dont really know how to maintenance a bike and storing/locking it was a pain. Plus it felt like I was always biking somewhere, meeting up with friends going home by subway and then going to retrieve my bike the next day. So yeah…never anti biking but it always felt like more trouble than it was worth to me. So I never replaced my bike after it was stolen.

But I signed up just before launch with my Citi card so it was $85/year or 2 1/2 weeks worth of subway fare.

Less than a month in…I must say I LOVE this program. Yes it has its kinks (bike and dock availability, app not 100% accurate etc.) But it has changed the way I relate to the city for the better in a big way. Besides the fact that chores are easier to do now that I dont have to walk so much…I find I use our parks more, I have been to events at BAM more in the last month than ever since I’ve been up here, I actually use my gym membership now and basically doing anything that involves the typical ‘should I walk, take the subway or bus?’ calculus has been accomplished by CitiBike.

I lived out in the borough for a long time and see a valuable and natural extension for the program into neighborhoods not currently served. I would have made the cost of the program back getting to the good supermarket and green market on Sundays instead of lazily defaulting to my crappy C-town.

I dont know if I will use it as much in the winter. But I feel I probably will as long as the streets are clear of snow/ice. I actually prefer running outdoors in the winter as our mid Atlantic summers make me overheat some. And yeah my brain does start to feel a little baked in the helmet after 30 mins.

I love this program and its changed living in this city for the better at least for me. I think it will only get smoother over time. If there was a non-expiring lifetime membership I would jump on it.

So thats my review. I for one love the bike share.

Since it was the BHA that intervened, I expect the BHA, not Andrew Porter, to keep the community informed on its status. How long have the plans been “on file”? How much longer will it take for approval? is anyone opposed?
