Looks Like The Montague Street Tunnel Will Be Closed For A Year

Take the R train to work? Get ready to shout to the heaven and say “NOOOOOO”. (Or if you’re a Star Trek TOS movie fan “KHAAAAANNNNN!”).

Reports say the the Montague Street tunnel, damaged in Superstorm Sandy, will be closed for repairs for about a year:

NYT: The repairs, expected to begin in August, would close the Montague tube, which connects the R between Brooklyn and Manhattan, for 12 to 14 months, the official said Tuesday. The agency is expected to address the work at a board meeting on Wednesday.

The authority’s repair plans, which were reported Tuesday in The Wall Street Journal, also call for the G train tunnel to close for several weekends this year. It will be replaced by a shuttle bus between Brooklyn and Queens. Plans for options to the R tunnel were not immediately clear.

Update: Here’s what the service diversions will look like:

    Holy crud.

This sucks, but that tunnel is so fragile it gets flooded every few months. Hopefully this will be for the better in the long run.

WSJ suggests leaving it flooded and renting SCUBA gear to those bike share nuts…

I hope this doesn’t make the R slow. It’s super fast now.
