On this date in 1856, Frank L. Baum was born in Chittenango, N.Y. He is, of course, best known for writing “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz.” And just as magical… It’s another Open Thread Wednesday on the Brooklyn Heights Blog. What’s on your mind? Comment away! (CT)

AEB’s favorite crossing guard (Hicks & Middagh) just had a nice morning row with what appeared to be a cop-a-box. (I hope that’s not an offensive term. My view was obscured by a tree, but I could hear the yelling on both sides.) Was the X-ing guard trying to warn parents they were about to be ticketed for illegal parking?

  • David on Middagh

I’m sorry, Cop IN a Box. I’m not fully awake. And I apologize again if that term is offensive, but I don’t know what to call those one-person patrol cabins.

  • Tired

Beware 3 Pierrepont! If you’re having a nice stroll with your dog or your mail cart along the west side of the street, you’re likely to have a heart attack — or be dragged to a barking match by two dogs in the Basset Hound category who assiduously guard their gate from other dogs. They’re allowed the brick walkway from the owners’ front door to the gate and so have no other room or interests in their front yard besides hanging out for a surprise shouting match.

I’ve been nearly brought to the ground a couple of times walking my Lab by when I didn’t know they were out. I’ve asked the owners to keep them in on several occasions. And yet there they are, at unexpected times of the day, provoking dangerous reactions from what was once a peaceful walk with a big dog.

    Fie!

Has anyone been to the acupuncturist on Hicks and Clark? I’d love to hear thoughts on the practice.

  • Wiley E.

I like it. I like it.

I find your response interesting…I get that it’s disturbing to your dogs, but they’re on their own property…why should the owner be required to keep them inside for doing what dogs do?

  • So much beeping

Does anyone know what that horrible beeping noise is on Hicks b/w Montague and Remsen (possibly coming from the Bossert construction site)? It’s been going on non-stop for at least two days/nights. More importantly, does anyone know how to go about stopping it? It’s loud enough that it can be heard from inside neighboring apartments (with the windows closed) and is especially noticeable at night when there is less traffic.

Got the terminology from EE on this old dog poop thread:

Hey you romantics – my friend (I swear) is going on a first date and wants suggestions for cute places in the neighborhood. I say Iris Cafe though I told her I’d take it to the group.

  • neighboronhicks

I think her talking to the cop was related to a screaming match that she got into with a woman who was dropping a child off at the school. I live on that corner and heard the woman dropping the child off at school start screaming at the crossing guard (since I live there I’m familiar with the crossing guard’s voice and it wasn’t her that began the shouting match). The crossing guard and the woman then engaged in a bit of back and forth, when I went to walk the dog later the crossing guard was speaking to the officer.

Nathan’s on Court Street. But then again, I’ve never been accused of being a romantic.

  • AEB

Ah, David, Miss Torres. I confess that she and I have established something of a truce since the good ol’ days when she was leaving her…personal belongings on the side stoop of my building and dragging the local garbage can into the street to prevent parking–and never returning the can. She’s over that. But her incessant AM whistle-blowing remains a joy forever.

  • Bloomy

Have you tried walking outside to locate what is beeping?

  • WILLOWL

eh, iris cafe is more of a lunch spot……in my opinion. I would say go to Bocco Lupo… super cute… tapas, great drinks..391 henry street.. just a short walk down from the heights.

  • DIBS

    Apparently he’s very self entitled

  • David on Middagh

    It does.

  • Alec

Henry’s End is romantic, Grimaldi’s is still a perfect first date spot (and cheap) and Noodle Pudding has $14 bottle of house red which is great to get the romance going… or go into Carroll Gardens and hit up Alma for the view…

  • Hicks St Guy

your movie premiere tonight? good luck.

The Wine Bar is a good bet.

  • GHB

Actually, the dogs are nice, as is their person. Dogs bark. Get over it!

  • Wiley E.

If you are going to Columbia Place, go to the RiverDeli. Better food, nicer people. Nicer decor. A good place to nurture a loving relationship on a first date.

  • Wiley E.

She should be on the BHB top 10 list next year.

  • David on Middagh

Thanks for the back story, NoH. I’m glad it wasn’t the officer doing the screaming!

    Thanks – it’s tomorrow!

    And they won’t start now!

  • AEB

On TOP of the top ten list….

Startling news about 100 Clark Street aka 1 Monroe Place: I confirmed the rumor that the plans for this site, in limbo since 2006, are now moving rapidly ahead again, with hearings scheduled with Landmarks over the plans filed back then for a 5-story high condo, to replace the sidewalk-shed-shrouded horror that’s there now. Demolition and construction shd start in the next few months. It’s way past time, too.

Forgot to mention that there are apparently three different film companies shooting on BH streets today. Not appreciating the hearty, loud banter on the street under my windows, starting at about 6am. But at least I don’t have a car.
