Dough No! Department Of Health Closes Montague Street Bagels & Deli

BHB got a tip this morning that Hot Bagels & Deli at 108 Montague Street has been shuttered by the Department of Health. Sure enough, the doors are locked, with a sign from the “City of New York Department of Health & Mental Hygiene” that shouts “CLOSED by order of the Commissioner.” It’s dated January 14, 2013. No “Hot Bag” of bagels today, it appears. Stand by as we scout for more details.

WEDNESDAY UPDATE: Still closed as of Tuesday evening. Reader Regina offers in comments: “Just got some info from a friend at the DOH (that) closure is due to a mouse carcass found inside the bagel oven.” Ouch!

So two new names suddenly pop up supporting this dump, I think sharont & downtown are obviously shills.

  • sharont

Listen All I know is everyone has issues, and if we knew half of what on between closed doors we never eat anywhere, I remember when Juniors near Fulton was closed down, its Bloomberg banging out small business owners, bottom line they are reopened and I hear they have a new management team in place, good luck Montague Bagels!!!!

  • Downtown

La Bagel Delight? Now it’s really amateur hour.

  • WillowNabe

    sharont,
Sorry, I have to disagree. Not every restaurant has issues.
I don’t eat in restaurants unless they have an A rating let alone try to hide a C rating.

  • Moni

Tried their bagels twice, maybe three times over the course of . this store’s existence. They were tasteless. Only shills could defend this joint after so many violations.

  • Tclinton11201

just take a little walk to the bagel place on Court south of Atlantic “Court Street Bagels”, delicious and never an issue with the order.

  • Regina

@ sharont, I was corporate counsel for the City of New York. During my 10 years with them, I made many friends within almost every city agency. My source is reliable. If you spoke to a inspector as you claim, what reason for the closure did they give?

  • sharont

Obviously your information is incorrect, They were closed based on a mouse that was seen that entered through the back door and left in the yard which the inspector saw, when the owners question so why are you shutting down the establishment they said its NYC dept health regulations that is a single rodant is seen in an establishment it has to be shut down right away! well that was total nonesense as you see within 48hrs how quickly they were reopened, think about it, if there were serious issues do you really think the city would allow this establishment to reopen so soon? Let me answer that for you…No not at all!

  • Blooomy

@sharont I think your definition of “serious issues” and an average person’s must differ. Here are a few choice violation from previous inspections (from the Department of Health website). To me this shows a history of violation that have not been addressed.

12/3/12 – Evidence of mice or live mice present in facility’s food and/or non-food areas and Live roaches present in facility’s food and/or non-food areas.

    7/20/12 – Live roaches present in facility’s food and/or non-food areas.

    7/4/12 – Live roaches present in facility’s food and/or non-food areas.

2/14/12 – Evidence of mice or live mice present in facility’s food and/or non-food areas.

1/23/12 – Evidence of mice or live mice present in facility’s food and/or non-food areas.

10/7/11 – Evidence of mice or live mice present in facility’s food and/or non-food areas.

1/13/11 – Evidence of mice or live mice present in facility’s food and/or non-food areas.

sad that my comment was deleted.

HOT BAGELS FOREVER. MICE AND ROACHES ARE NOT NEW TO RESTAURANTS IN THE AREA. WE’RE RIGHT BY THE WATER. PLUS HO BAGS HAS A BACKYARD. YEAH THEY NEED TO GET IT TOGETHER A LITTLE BUT ALL OF THIS HATE IS TOTALLY UNWARRANTED/I GUARANTEE HALF OF YOU HAVEN’T EVEN BEEN THERE. NEW MANAGEMENT RULES, THE BAGEL IS THE BEST IN THE AREA (only Bagel World on Court is better…La Bagel Delight is too doughy…c’mon now).

stop hating on the internet. you’re all too old for that.

The original owners and crew were a thousand times better. Especially the night baker “Raja” (sp?) he was very friendly and made great sandwiches. The new owners and crew are a bunch assclowns, hope they sell out to someone who actually knows how to run a bagel shop.

  • I grew up here

You guy’s don’t get it. I grew up here and if you didn’t want a mediocre burger from Happy Days, you would go to HoBags (its colloquial name) and get a wide variety of DOPE sandwiches at ANY time. It’s a great place to stumble into at 3AM with your buddies and indulge in a Fat Tony, Big Joe, or a Badda Bing.

Secondly, their bagels don’t suck. They’re pretty decent. Yes we know this isn’t H&H bagels or even La Bagel Delight on Court, but it’s still worth having a good place to go on an early Sunday morning when you’re dying to put something in your stomach to avoid a hangover that will mangle you.

I really hope this place stays open, but I also hope the business can take care of its mouse/rat problem.

  • Saa419

I think I’ve been watching too much of Restaurant Impossible and have been grossed out by what goes on behind closed kitchen doors. All I can think about is if there are mice in the Bagle place…I can only imagine what’s been crawling around the disgusting Chinese restaurants on Montague Street, below street level. On second thought, I don’t want to think about it. All I can say is I’m happy when I see a big “A” posted in the window….

  • http://www.flickr.com/photos/13189502@N02/ Eddyenergizer

I grew up here too, and I do “get it” I agree with most of what you said but only in the sense of the original owners and crew. The new owners of the place “don’t get it”. Although they had been making some slight improvements recently, overall the place remains a mess.
There is no reason for not having an “A” grade other than laziness and or cheapness. An “A” grade is 0-13 violation points, a “B” is 14-27 points and a C is 28 an above. Montague Bagels got 75 points!!! Why is that? By far most restaurants in the neighborhood have an “A” what is Montague Bagels excuse?

  • Tclinton11201

100% with Eddy, all I hear from “patrons” (and most likely the owners posting here too…) are excuses… especially like the “by the water” comment… doesn’t prevent Cafe Iris (actually at water level) to get an “A”

and what exactly justify the “smoking where you cook” issue?

    Enough excuses.

  • Wiley E.

So, I guess it is okay to eat mouse-shit sandwiches at 3 AM when you are drunk and don’t know any better. (?) I’ll pass on that one. Close it down.

  • willowl

    wiley E is straight edge

  • willowl

i grew up here too, fat tonys for life son.

can they send someone around to IronWok on Clark sooner than later, these guys are “hosing” the laneway beside their restaurant out every night and based on the effluent on the sidewalk potholes every morning…..yuk
