Dough No! Department Of Health Closes Montague Street Bagels & Deli

BHB got a tip this morning that Hot Bagels & Deli at 108 Montague Street has been shuttered by the Department of Health. Sure enough, the doors are locked, with a sign from the “City of New York Department of Health & Mental Hygiene” that shouts “CLOSED by order of the Commissioner.” It’s dated January 14, 2013. No “Hot Bag” of bagels today, it appears. Stand by as we scout for more details.

WEDNESDAY UPDATE: Still closed as of Tuesday evening. Reader Regina offers in comments: “Just got some info from a friend at the DOH (that) closure is due to a mouse carcass found inside the bagel oven.” Ouch!

gross. so glad* i’ve gotten food there twice in the last 7 days.

*by glad, i mean not glad

  • GHB

Their bagels suck, and always have. I get bagels at Zucker’s on Chambers Street, a few doors down from the 2/3 stop. Worth the trip!

  • harumph

    buh bye… I hope!

  • Winston Smith

About time, The place was a filthy disgusting pit, Good riddance.

  • Gerry

We love Lassen & Hennings they have great bagles, etc.

I think this is the only place on Montague Street that is open 24 hours per day?

  • Rick

I only bought their bagels, and really liked them. Obviously they are not the classic New York bagel, but I like them as a sort of hybrid bagel/roll, good for sandwiches. Hope it was what most of these DOH violations turn out to be, something like temperature control of the refrigerated food, which hopefully they can easily fix.

  • Hazel

No. Not the only 24 hour place on Montague.

Happy Days Diner and the news store next to it are 24 hours, too.

  • C.

Good riddance. Hopefully they stay closed. This place couldn’t get the simplest of orders right. I’ve never had a correct order since the new owners took over. Was in there a couple weeks ago and as I was leaving saw a huge cricket or something on the floor. Gross.

Go to Bagel Cafe on Clinton and Atlantic. Good bagels and CLEAN.

  • NoProblemo

Never had an issue with anything there.

Good for you GHB that you always have to tell here you get your bagles. Guess you are retired since you seem to have plenty of time on your hand to take a bagel trip.

  • Martin L

to rude NonProblemo: Here’s a simple lesson for you to try to grasp: An intelligent and reasonable conversation about a controversial issue does not depend on uncalled for, gratuitous personal insults.

  • Regina

Just got some info from a friend at the DOH “closure is due to a mouse carcass found inside the bagel oven” Ewww.

  • Mr. Crusty

I didn’t need to hear that Regina. Ugh.

  • GHB

No Problemo is Gerry… note how he spells “bagles”. Gerry, I have a very good job, but I go to Tribeca on weekends. You got a problem with that?

  • north heights res

This is so sad and disappointing. Under the old ownership, that placed rocked: good bagels, great service. I hate that it’s become something so foul.

  • Mr. Crusty

Good catch GHB. I’m sure we would have soon had some wonderful complements for Gerry from NoProblemo, lol.

  • Jorale-man

I’m surprised Bagel Boy hasn’t weighed in here yet.

But yes, I find the place on Clinton & Atlantic has been very good in their new guise. And it’s very clean and friendly too.

Been eating there a lot recently, aye Crusty? Ha Ha Ha

  • Wiley E.

    krusty eats his bagels burned.

  • Mr. Crusty

Actually on Atkins diet so no carbs for me, but then again mouse is pure protein.

  • bagel boy

Hey. I’ve got a job. No relation to the bagel store although their bagels are pretty good. Dead rat and all.

I actually prefer Terrace Bagel in WT.

  • David G.

That’s disgusting. Is the Bagel Cafe on Clinton any good?

  • sharont

Love these Guys, Spoke to a DOH inspector and was not a dead carcass in any oven, that was false, place is always clean and to my understanding they are fighiting it in court and will be reopened as possible as today. There were some plumbing issues also going on.

  • Bloomy

So from the Department of Health’s website, here at the listed issues, all 11 of them….

    “Sanitary Violations

    2) Food Protection Certificate not held by supervisor of food operations.

    10) Food contact surface not properly maintained.
    11) Accurate thermometer not provided in refrigerated or hot holding equipment.”

This is not the first time there has been an issue. I remember for a while the place had a “C” rating, and tried to hide the sign behind one of the tables outside.

  • Mr. Crusty

Yeah sharont, the place is always clean as the DOH’s report Bloomy was good enough to fetch, indicates. Do you own the place?

  • harumph

    Thank you @Bloomy.
Place was dis-gust-ing. This just verifies it.

  • Hicks St Guy

place is convenient, not much else.

  • NoProblemo

@ Martin L: Intelligent conversation? LOL. Ok, you are allowed to have your own opinion.

I am actually Gerry, Arch and Mr Crusty, all in one person. I am glad you have been enjoying the entertainment I have provided to you for some time now.

  • Gabriel

Hot bagels could only pull off a simple bagel, and even then they often messed up orders. The only thing that made them unique was being open 24/7, since there’s no real other place to get a bagel at 3 in the morning. Go to La Bagel Delight on Court St! It has always been better and always will be better in every facet.

  • WillowNabe

Uh, when has it been OK to use the F word????

  • God Almighty

    To add to Bloomy’s post:

    The total violations 75 points!
Items 1-8 are in red indicating “critical” violations.
