Promenade Tree Lighting Next Wednesday

The Promenade Christmas Tree lighting will take place next Wednesday, December 19 at 5:30 p.m., at the Montague Street entrance to the Promenade. Santa will be there, as will the Grace & Spiritus Chorale to lead the caroling. The tradition of a Promenade Christmas Tree goes back to before there was a Promenade–perhaps it was set up on or near the Penny Bridge–during the World War II years. It was started by the Brooklyn Heights Garden Club, which continues to pay and arrange for the tree.

Years ago, I spoke to some members of the Brooklyn Heights Garden Club about planting a tree at the site instead of putting up a cut tree each year, but the suggestion was brushed aside. What do other people think about this suggestion?

  • Willowtowncop

I think it’s a good idea. I always thought it was a crime to murder a giant beautiful tree in Rockefeller Center.

I also like that this is taking place the week before Christmas and not the month before. Dragging it out the entire month has gotten out of hand.

Great idea to plant permanent maybe It could be dedicated to a special heights resident like Walt Whitman?

  • Boerum Bill

And Pier 6 should have playground equipment that transforms into a giant menorah.

Having to look at a Christmas tree all year long? Yeah… let’s not.

There’s nothing wrong with growing and cutting trees. Young trees are good for the environment.

@ lori – I do not think that a tree would grow in that spot remeber that is a ledge full of dirt and land-fill I feel that the tree would die.

@ Cat Ghost – I agree not a big deal to cut down a tree

@ Sheila – I would like to dedicate something in my familys name here in Brooklyn Heights we are thinking about a new water fountian on the Promenade.

  • MonroeOrange

Gerry….Dedicate an aquatics center…I heard from someone, can’t remember who, that it is desperately needed….just sayin……

  • Gerry

@ MonroeOrange – a much needed aquatics center is too ambitious a plan for my wallet at this time.

In fact BBP does not even have a decent out door pool and so I will continue to swim at Hofstra University or Asphalt Green and work on a really cool water fountian for the Promenade.

  • MonroeOrange

Gerry, I hope to see that water fountain someday, I think it’s a wonderful gesture, good luck! And I’m sure someone will use it to swim (or bathe) in ;)

Will Marty M dress-up as Santa? He never misses a shot at publicity.
