Montague Street Sidewalk Construction: Wrapped!

At the end of August, the sidewalk in front of 111-115 Montague Street became a battle zone as infrastructure construction work below was set to ensue for three months. Affected buildings included the Chinese Hand Laundry, McCurdy Real Estate, Peerless Shoe Repair, Connecticut Muffin and Subway.

At the time, BHB noted that crews had done a formidable job of allowing easy access to the affected retailers—and now, even more importantly, the job has been finished right on time. As of this week, the work is done, the sidewalk is brand new and access is again clear. Bravo! (Photos: CT)

Bravo, indeed! One cannot take good work for granted.

I still miss browsing the Strand Annex, a trot across the Brooklyn Bridge and a walk down Fulton Street. It was folded back into the main store on 12th St. after having been put out of business by street work that made it almost inaccessible for what seemed like a year.

(A discreet nod to the P.S. Bookshop, which after a pleasant browse has provided me some reading for this week.)

Now I wonder how long it will take before the businesses with their big “Open during construction” signs will take them down?

fyi, it’s called Mandalay One, not Chinese Hand Laundry.
