Dog Poop Showdown on Cranberry Street

In the aftermath of last week’s Mom vs. Wack Jobs in Brooklyn Heights debate comes evidence of another controversy brewing in the neighborhood.

The issue: Dog owners who dump their pooch’s poo into someone else’s garbage. One resident of Cranberry Street has had enough and posted this quite polite and reasonable notice on the street:

To Whom It May Concer:
Thank you for picking up after your dog.
Now, what to do with that trash?
Please be responsible and respectful and:
1)take it home to your trash bin, or
2) place it in the public trash bin on the corner

Please DO NOT put it:
1) in your neighbor’s plastic recycling
2) in you neighbor’s paper recycling
3) in your neighbor’s trash
4) in the planters or tree pits on the street
5) ever so neatly on top of your neighbor’s trash
6) on the sidewalk

Thank you,
Brian @ 31

Is this an issue on your street?

@tom do you really want the NYPD to try an enforce these regulations? How exactly should they do that? Undercover surveillance teams to catch those that do not curb their dogs?

You do understand that for a ticket to be issued the officer would have to witness the infraction personally. I’m not sure many would agree that this is the bet use of limited manpower.

It’s not just the crap but the nice puddles of yellow that adorn my last step. I have to jump in order to avoid it. Two solutions: 1. Keep the sidewalk wet on dry days with the hose. Dog owners don’t like wet feet. 2. Home Depot/Lowes sells a pepper based solution that drives pets away so they move quickly past your home. You have to sprinkle after each rain though for maximum effectiveness. Ground pepper might be a good alternative.

As a responsible dog owner whose dog pees and poops in the curb, and who throws away the leftovers in a public garbage can, I decided today that I will let my dog do whatever and wherever it wants to do it. I am being blamed anyway and called names as in above posts. Might at least contribute to the mess.

The other day I saw a guy peeing outside chipotle with two cops on a car watching while eating. Guess the bribes by 50% off meals don’t do a thing.

The city employees who are paid to enforce parking laws do an excellent job issuing violations. Ditto the sanitation cops. (I might add that they often do TOO good a job.) Why can’t we enforce the law when it comes to canine urine and excrement? This has nothing to do with whether you love dogs or not. It has to do with intelligent and civilized behavior.

Everytime I read this blog I become more convinced that the majority of people in this neighborhood are insane. If you hate being in such close proximity to other people, their children, pets, arguments, and car horns, get out of New York City. In the meantime, use some common sense and courtesy. Fellow dog owners: scoop, curb, and use public bins. And not in playgrounds.

I you let your children play in the northern end of Cadman Park, whether the pee happens at 8:45 a.m. or 9:01, there’s still pee there. It’s also one of the few places left without trekking to Prospect Park where a dog can touch grass. Rat poison is often laid throughout the southern part of the park. I wish it could be spruced up a bit and be cleaner for both kids and dogs in separate spaces.

    Now I feel crazy. Ahhh.

I am gobsmacked that anyone would think it’s OK to dispose of your dog excrement in someone else’s trash bins because you don’t want to carry a smelly bag. Unbelievable.

North Heights Res: you are forgetting that the world revolves around the adult toddlers that do these things. Maybe no one taught them any manners and rewarded them for both good and bad behavior. When they let the doggie poop and then shirk away from the cleanup, it is the only time that they are not saying LOOK AT ME !

I wish I was able to join in when this topic was hot here on the blog;Besides obeying the “Pooper Scooper” laws, dog owners should also carry a container of water to dilute the urine after their dog relieves themselves….Depending on where one is walking in the Heights the smell of dog urine can get really funky..With so many dogs living in the Heights,
extraordinary measures are necessary to maintain the ambiance.

    Right On, Bagel Boy.

Does anyone know Pepper or have his contact info? He asked about Ray and George at 140 Remsen St back in January. Any help is appreciated.

I really wish people would clean up their dog’s poop on the sidewalk. sigh. state street to be exact, from hicks right back to court.

  • a

grow up. it’s a trashcan, not your living room.

  • bagel boy

Unfortunately this problem will not go away until the filthy dog people that sneak around with purpose are confronted.

If you see something. Say something and for sure stop something that impacts the whole nabe.

I actually had an argument with an idiot COP on the subject, who argued it was absolutely legal for a dog to pee and crap anywhere it wanted, “the dog is an anmal”, he would never stop his dog from going anywere it wanted. There are no Curb your Dog regulations, “those expired”, Dog pee, etc “does not harm the plants or lawn”. I wonder why they never catch anyone? Open your eyes, yell at a few idiot dog owners on the PA once in a while.

Dog owners always seem to pull their dog away from their property and then wait patiently while the dog pees on the neighbors stoop. Why cant I just unload on the front stoop of the dog owners homes? Maybe BK Dog Owner should let the dog pee and crap on his own property? It doesnt hurt anything??
