Open Thread Wednesday: August 15, 2012

It appears that our Brooklyn Heights neighbor on Sidney Place who has dedicatedly maintained an “Obama 08″ bumper sticker in his or her front window for five years is still a believer. Recently, the rez demonstrated ongoing support for the Prez with a 2012 sign placed beside the original. Obama, meanwhile, just celebrated his 51st birthday on August 4. On this Open Thread Wednesday, what’s your vote for topic of the day? (Photo: Chuck Taylor)

@Livingston- why do you think you lost that job for God’s sake. Bush pushed an irresponsible economy that they knew would crash and it did. The Republican’s f-ed us so badly that we were on the brink of a great depression. Every reputable economist said it would take at least 5, more likely 10 years to recover IF we took the right steps (basically all the steps the Republicans have been blocking since day 1).I sympathize with your job situation, but not acknowledging what you put you there isn’t going to help.

  • Neighbor Hood

@HenryLOL- never have I seen a more appropriate handle. LOL indeed. The poorest will pay MORE the middle will get a modest break and he wealthiest reap HUGE savings. BUT those huge savings are passed on to he middle and lower classes with cuts to vital programs and services. It’s not a fabrication. It’s there damn budget numbers!

  • HenryLoL

That is COMPLETE GARBAGE, @Neighbor Hood. Get off your high horse. You are spewing LIES. Also, there is nothing wrong with wealthy people getting a break because they make more. It’s called INCENTIVE. Besides, the poor are not paying more — that is total spin. And, the crazy spending is from the liberals, not the conservatives! HA! LoL is right.

  • Mr. Crusty

@Livingston: “i had a steady, well-paying job during the “Bush years” that many of you complain about. Nothing like that since Obama took over.”

I love the way people think. 350 million people in the country but he looks solely at his own situation and makes a decision on who would be better to run the country. Rather interesting.

  • Mr. Crusty

@HenryLolAlso, there is nothing wrong with wealthy people getting a break because they make more. It’s called INCENTIVE.

Now it’s my turn to LOL. Not even going to comment.

  • Neighbor Hood

@HenryLOL- my horse only seems high from the hole y’all dug for yourself.

  • HenryLoL

This country spends more than a trillion more than it takes in. Time to reign it in and stop supporting crazy out of control programs that do not work — like Medicaid. Taxing people more does nothing. It makes a very short term revenue stream, but it also stops investment, hiring, and philanthropy. As for this silly issue of the wealthy only paying a small amount, its mostly because much of their income comes from investments. Its pure nuts to change the capital gains rate. It just hurts everyone that wants to invest. Who cares if some billionaires capital gains tax is lower than my fed tax rate. Oy.

The temperature indicator (in Fahrenheit and Celsius) at the TD Bank on Montague is back in operation.

Has anyone been back to Custom House? Worth going? Also — Any news on what will open in the former ‘Diva Salon’ space on Henry in North Heights? They moved down the block near Bevvaco.

  • Rick

    @HenryLol
“This country spends more than a trillion more than it takes in.”

Yes, that needs to be addressed, but not when we’re teetering on the edge of another recession.A recession that could have been avoided if the government (spender of last resort) hadn’t been prevented from creating infrastructure jobs by the Republicans.

    Wow.

For decades the Republicans have trashed Europe and socialism, but some of the most successful economies in the world are in Europe. Look at Denmark and Norway – pretty high taxes, big-time social net, and they’re doing great. Germany would be too if it wasn’t for the drain of some less responsible nations. The idea that taxes and social programs make for a bad economy has been proven to be wrong by many real-world examples. The Republican party loves to talk trash.

Let’s charge tourists a $5 surcharge to visit Brooklyn. That would help balance the budget.

D@mn straight I vote my own interests. Last time I looked, the other 350 million weren’t responsible for paying my mortgage.

  • Neighbor Hood

@Rick- well said. Problem is you are citing real world actual examples and facts or as HenryLOL would call them “GARBAGE”. These people long ago checked outta the fact based realm. Austerity has been tried as a solution in some countries in Europe as well and it’s failed miserably, but again, who needs facts?
@Livingston-“D@mn straight I vote my own interests. Last time I looked, the other 350 million weren’t responsible for paying my mortgage.” -You know how I said I sympathize with your jobless situation? Not so much now.
Hope you sleep well in that bed you’ve made for yourself.

Why in God’s name did someone have to mention politics…

  • HenryLoL

Lol. Try doing some research versus reading the liberal-owned media. Bye bye bama. And good riddance.

  • Rick

You mean liberal media like The Wall Street Journal, The Washington Times, FOX News, The NY Post, The Daily News, National Review, The Daily Standard, The American Spectator…

“There are two novels that can change a bookish fourteen-year old’s life: The Lord of the Rings and Atlas Shrugged. One is a childish fantasy that often engenders a lifelong obsession with its unbelievable heroes, leading to an emotionally stunted, socially crippled adulthood, unable to deal with the real world. The other, of course, involves orcs.” – John Rogers

Note to self: Never ever again frame Open Post Wednesday with a mention of politics. Damn, I knew I should have stuck with “Happy Birthday, Madonna” this Thursday… Egads!

  • http://selfabsorbedboomer.blogspot.com Claude Scales

I read Atlas Shrugged at the age of fourteen, because my eighth grade math teacher recommended it to anyone who thought they were mature enough to understand it. I loved the message that smart kids like me, not jocks, should rule the world. I gave up being an Ayn Rand devotee in high school when I realized none of the girls for whom I lusted wanted to be a railroad president like Dagny Taggart, so being an objectivist was unlikely to facilitate my getting laid.

Every time I see a mr crusty post I think – “what a pompous blow hard know at all he must be” – I just can’t help it crusty

  • Willowtowncop

You know the sports talk shows where Bob from Queens calls in so he can pretend for a few minutes that anyone on earth besides him cares what he thinks about the Mets bullpen? Why does this conversation remind me of those shows and the horrible little troll at work who listens to them loud enough to make other people contemplate vandalizing his radio?

  • GHB

@Livingston, instead of blaming the government for losing your job, have you ever considered that you suck at what you do? Just a thought…

  • Mr. Crusty

    Kisses Gardener.

@Livingston: “D@mn straight I vote my own interests. Last time I looked, the other 350 million weren’t responsible for paying my mortgage.”

You know what I find amazing is that the Repubplocan Party have convinced some like Mr. Livingston here that they are the party looking out for their financial interests when nothing could be further from the truth.

  • David on Middagh

315mm. Not 350. Could y’all please use real facts in your fake arguments? Thanks.

  • Bloomy

@David on Middagh: Closer to 314 million. If you are going to complain about facts, might as well get yours straight too. :)

    Mr. Crusty:

I don’t believe either party is looking out for my interests, it’s up to me to do so (btw, I’m not a registered member of any political party and have voted both sides of the fence). I’m just willing to take a shot w/ someone else, as I’m unimpressed the with current resident of the White House, on many levels.

    GHB:

I never said I blame the government for losing my job, and yes, I have continued to get work and at top rates — but just not with the same level of reliability that I once had (which btw, has a trickle down effect as I have become much more conservative in my spending habits). What I do blame the current administration for is engendering an economic atmosphere of uncertainty and antagonism; companies, being conservative by nature, can no longer be confident about the future (for planning purposes) and therefore are sitting on the sidelines waiting to see what happens next. This has hurt a lot people (not just me).

The thing I find interesting (and discouraging) about the respondents on BHB is how personally vicious they can be if you disagree w/ their viewpoint. I have merely stated that, per my outlook, I disagree but have never lobbed any personally-directed verbal bombs at anyone nor wished them ill-will. In fact, I defend everyone’s right to hold a differing opinion (and I enjoy a good debate!). I will even go so far to say that though I fundamentally disagree w/ the current Commander in Chief, per the origin of this posting, I too wish him a Happy Birthday (along w/ a speedy retirement) — there is no malice in my thoughts or opinions. I’m very happy to live in a country where we are not required to hold to a one party-line (my father left a place like that).

  • WillowSt.Neighbor

    Livingston,
I agree with you. I have been posting less and less these days due to the viciousness of the attacks levied if one disagrees with the majority.

  • None

@Livingston – quit being a pu**y, sorry you lost your job, dude, and I agree with you – we need some stability and that’s unlikely until we vote for which lesser evil blowhard crusty will get his name in the paper for the next four years (but, at least it won’t be a chick, unless maybe Biden steps down but that dude should get his face on the penny – Lincoln shouldn’t have the penny and fiver)

    @GHB – don’t be a d!ck – that wasn’t cool
