When and/or if I ever run for public office again, my campaign slogan will be “End Clustering Now!”. Okay, I admit that I am probably on the verge of being annoying, but what the heck, it’s open thread Wednesday. Almost anything goes…

I dont have time to wade through NYC Law to find the statute. However, I can offer anecdotal evidence.
Mid 90’s. I was in front of the Manhattan Municipal Building, after I was, ironically, paying parking tickets. When a cop stopped another cyclist for running a red light. He pulled the guy over and started issuing him a ticket a couple of feet from where I was unlocking my bike. I acknowledged empathy to my fellow rider, to which the officer took offense. “I can issue you a ticket right now” he said to me with an ugly grimace.
    “Really for what”? I asked.
“Illegal attachment to city property. You’re not allowed to lock your bike there”.
“Oh really, where am I supposed to to lock it up”?
    “At a designated bike rack”
“Ok if you can tell me where there is a bike rack within two blocks I’ll gladly take the ticket” I got him on that one as he just told me to “mind my own business” in the future….
I guess, he didn’t know (nor did I, at the time) there was a bike rack right under the Municipal Building…
A few weeks later, I told the story to my uncle, who was a police officer and asked if the law existed. He said it did but was never enforced for bicycles.

@ knight: and who would they write the ticket to? is your name and address engraved on your bike? it’s not pd’s job, it’s sanitation. they tag abandoned bikes with a warning to the owner that they will be clipped in a certain amount of time, and then come back and remove them after maybe a week if they are still there. sanitation then goes to the precinct where the desk makes a log entry in case someone reports one stolen that was removed.

  • WillowtownCop

I believe they are there to prevent trucks from driving over the bridge.

  • WillowtownCop

I was thinking exactly the same thing.

  • north heights res

Contrarian POV: I kind of like the new comments. Yes, I have to scroll a little more, but I like the organization, and I can skip threads I have no interest in.

  • Knight

    You missed the point.

  • Big Dave

I love those barbers, men and women, all who do a great job at a reasonable price!

  • Big Dave

    agreed!!

  • T.K. Small

David, What do you think of the proposed campaign slogan, “End Clustering Now!”?

  • Master Of Middagh

I wonder how small these things can get?

  • Knight

I could rally behind that easier than I can get behind Obama or any of the Republican hopefuls!

Where did the ExploitTalent, err, ExploreTalent post go? I don’t think it should have been posted in the first place, so not sorry to see it gone.

  • T.K. Small

I just returned from Montague & Henry. The wind was so strong it blew the saliva right out of my mouth! Yuck! If that wasn’t bad enough, when I got upstairs to my apartment and opened the door, my plants were blown off the windowsill. What a mess!!!

  • Jorale-man

Conde Nast Traveler has a story about spots in the area where literary types hang out – some interesting choices:

Interesting article! Book Court is a personal favorite of mine. Thanks for posting, Jorale-man.

@Willowtown: I assume you’re taking offense to the “ticket happy cops” remark. I stand by it. NYPD aren’t the only “cops” around. Who would the Sanitation Department send out? Trash collectors? Street sweepers? Wayne broom drivers? No. Santiation Police Officers (aka “cops”). And what would they do? They would “ticket” the items for removal … not issue “summonses” in the NYPD sense, but “tickets” nonetheless. Please think beyond the NYPD before you criticize others’ remarks.

  • WillowtownCop

sanitation inspectors are “cops” as much as the meter maids who wear our uniforms because the city wants people to think there are more of us than they are. ticket drones are not cops. they produce revenue for the city. they don’t come when someone calls for help. they are not cops.

    Master,
The Pearl Street Barber is on Pearl St. in Dumbo. I believe Robert, the owner, was recommended on Yelp and one of his specialties is shaving with a straight razor. My husband just got his haircut there this morning. You can check out the Yelp recommendations yourself. He gets 5 stars.

Steer away from the tailor on Henry by Clark – he ruined a pair of suit pants taking them in for me

He took them in too much and trimmed the stitchline so tight, there was no material to let it back out

    $1,000 suit down the drain

When I complained, he put on his ‘no speak english’ routine

    Beware

  • BH’er

I guess it’s time to allocate some street parking spaces for bikes!

We have car parking but no bike parking. When people starting parking their cars in their living room or basement, I’ll take my bike off the street sign!

    :)

  • BH’er

How do you make a report of an abandoned bike? Can you call sanitation or 311?

There’s bike chained in front of my building that should be landmarked!

  • BH’er

Counselor, your objection has been noted!

  • BH’er

I will campaign for office against Mr T.K. Small

My platform is that under the “Leave a Reply” heading, there needs to be a note asking that all posts observe a standard of decorum, i.e. please don’t post anything here that you wouldn’t say in front of a group of people who knew your full identity

We all enjoy a tremendous venue where we may post our opinions, but please reserve your judgements of others (based on the limited details typically included)

While my opponent has a worthy cause, we must have our priorities!

    Cast your votes!

    PLEASE!!!!!!!!

  • T.K. Small

BH’er: I see a bit of an inconsistency. You want people to be polite, and act as if everyone knows your name and identity, but you post using a “nom de plume”. Despite this inconsistency, I can readily endorse your campaign. My comments are never combative, usually polite, and hopefully occasionally funny.

The purpose of my campaign is to end the dreaded clustering of messages. I don’t see why we need to be opponents. You are more than welcome to politely join in this effort, and to the extent possible, I will assist in your effort.

  • Master Of Middagh

Thanks for the tip! I hadn’t even thought of DUMBO!

  • David on Middagh

T.K., I would have responded sooner, but your latest post was lost in the middle of a thread.

I prefer the slogan, “Don’t F with the timeline!”

Sorry if that’s crass, but you shouldn’t have to click every link under “Nabe Chatter” on the front page, loading each thread multiple times, if you want to catch up on the latest that was said.

  • T.K. Small

We can certainly have more than one slogan expressing opposition, outrage and condemnation of message clustering. Using a variety of language could appeal to different sensibilities throughout the neighborhood.

    For instance:

People who promote bicycle lanes, hate clustering…
People who love their cars, hate clustering…

    Etc., etc., etc.

The people, United, will never be clustered!
