Does anyone have a good internet service provider to pass along? We live in Brooklyn Heights, and cannot use our cable service or Verizon as a provider. I was hoping to use Clear but it turns out they don’t have service in the Heights at this time. It’s proving to be very difficult to get internet in our apartment, which seems ridiculous to me. Any advice would be great! Thank you!

@CK, you don’t have Time Warner? No cable TV of any kind? As for Verizon, FiOS is still rolling out and doesn’t have full coverage, but they do still offer DSL service over the old copper wires (I assume you have telephone?). Not nearly as fast as cable or fiber, but usable. Another option would be to get something like a mifi which broadcasts a wifi signal from a cellular data signal. You can do this with most any mobile carrier. Don’t know if BH has any 4G service, but it works over 3G at near the same speed as DSL.

Andrew Porter – I find that statement – about teenagers not fully understanding death- to be quite a generalization and not true in all cases. Truthfully, I’m a little upset that picture is up. It’s clearly a private moment for someone in mourning and not for all to see.

Btw – I’ve been to Archway in DUMBO and really like it.

Katie doesn’t stretch a canvas though, which few framing places will do. She referred me to some place in the east village, unfort. I can’t recall the name, so you’ll have to stop into her store to ask. It was about $35 (that E. Vill. place does framing too, though I didnt actually want the canvas framed anyway). Agree that Katie is excellent for framing.

FYI: I have T/W for all three – Tv, Computer and Telephone. They now have special rate for 1 year, $99. Check this out.

As for picture framing, I keep picking up good empty frames for very little and try to match to pictures. You can use a mat to fill in around the inner frame. Of course, this will save only on the wood part, and I give it to the shop on Montague St. to complete. It does save a bit.

Each time my name is mentioned on the internet I get a Google Alert. Thanks for the free publicity, AL! I sent you this message yesterday but it’s still in moderation.

It doesn’t matter if you like me or respect me. I just stopped reading/ commenting on BHB. My career is doing just fine.

It looks like Brooklyn Law School is in the (industry) tabloid press: http://abovethelaw.com/2010/11/hot-models-get-busy-in-brooklyn-law-library/

(The link is only moderately safe for work, just as a warning)

What bugs me is the bait and switch the article suggests went on between the company shooting the ad and the Brooklyn Law administration. In a nutshell, it seems that Diesel Jeans wanted to do a shoot in the BL library, and told the administration that the clothes would be the heart of the shoot. One look at the pictures, and the scantily-clad models they show hanging over desks and textbooks, shows that was very much not the case.

I too am upset that picture is being used for the open thread. Was she asked permission to be photographed? Probably not….

Cat: I’ve used Urban Classics a number of times. Dave is friendly, reliable, and accommodating. It seems expensive to me, but I’d imagine that most repair services are.

That photo was taken on a public street in broad daylight. Y’all complaining about really really really need to get a life. Like now.

Sorry for joining this conversation late, but about the dog, that is a big deal… can you describe the dog? maybe it wasnt an owner but a dog walker. Could you be more descriptive, possibly the time of day and the type of dog.

With the space now being empty at Dimples, has anyone heard what may be going into the old Jennifer Convertables space?

sl: I’ve heard rumors of a combination cell phone store, nail salon and optician.

Wow – more than I could have wished for….. Oh wait, hopefully they will still have room for a bank too :)

    Hi All,

First I’d just like to say that I really enjoy the Heights Blog. I’m about to travel for a while and I already look forward to receiving the news from home via BHB.

Anyway: I live on Columbia Heights near Clark (not the prom side) at the back of my building, and I’ve heard a lot of really loud arguing and screaming recently, throughout the night, sounding as if it’s coming from outside. It seems to be a couple…it’s a bit worrisome and I’m wondering if anyone else has heard this or might know where it’s coming from.

thanks, north heights res. I’ll let my friend know.

also thanks for the tips about firefox. I’ve tried to update my plugins but something always goes wrong. I’ll have to try again.

cat — Dave and the Urban Classics crew are above and beyond honest, but they are pricey. My brother-in-law had an old Mercedes (older than your friend’s car), and Dave was his go-to for repairs. I’ve used them for years for my random American cars, and I never felt ripped off. And Dave, alone, is worth the price of admission.

On the issue of the improved BHB: it worked on Firefox for a while last night, and then FF crashed. I’ve already gotten pretty used to using Safari for BHB and Firefox for everything else, so I guess I’ll just carry on that way. And, again, BHB and Firefox work fine in my office where I use a PC — it’s on my home Mac where I have the problem.

    @ Raisincat

FYI you don’t need permission to take someone’s photograph.

    RE: the abused dog:

I have heard that the dog is a black and white pitbull or pit mix. It apparently is VERY dog-aggressive. The owner is very frustated with the dogs’s behavior and tries to discipline the dog, or to control his behavior, by “hanging” him — and possibly doing so with a choke-chain type of collar. WIth some types of “high-drive” dogs, I do think that minor physical corrections might be called for at times, but this is totally beyond the pale.

Again: I may know this dog from around the neighborhood but have not seen it acting aggressive nor have I seen the owner acting so badly. My info is from friends who have seen it first-hand.

CK – I just say an ad for RCN. They have a hook up with Tivo for their DVR. Not sure they are in the neighborhood, but you may want to check them out.

If you want a weird combination of stores in one, there’s a sign on the sidewalk in front of the computer store on Atlantic next to Sahadi that advertises “honey, luggage, travel agent”. Big jugs of honey in plastic containers with no labels inside; weird…
