    Honey, if you’d taken Speech 101, you would know that you were seeking differences in “dialects” — not “accents.” I’ve got a degree in Speech/Communication, and smile every time I hear the typical American confuse the terms. Everybody who is born in the U.S.A. has an “American accent.” However, where and how one was raised defines his or her “American dialect.”

    George, you are a pompous ass. You can’t hear my accent but it is spelled the same way regardless of where you live in New York City.

    You are a classic example of the saying, “a little knowledge is a dangerous thing”.

    Heather focusing on the accents of individuals makes perfect sense to most anyone excepting yourself because you majored in Speech and Communication. I’m sure your professor would have no problem with Heather’s use of the term.
