Pier 6 Playground Opens Saturday

The long-awaited opening of the Pier 6 Playground portion of Brooklyn Bridge Park (see sneak preview here) will be this coming Saturday, June 5.

New York Magazine: As if there weren’t enough knockout parks in this city, the Babylon of New York playgrounds is set to open this Saturday, at Brooklyn Bridge Park’s Pier 6 (Atlantic Avenue and Columbia Street, Cobble Hill). The harborside green is sectioned into four equally stupendous play areas: There’s Swing Valley, which includes Tarzan-style ropes and double-seaters; Slide Mountain and its thirteen-foot winding tube slide; a 6,000-square-foot Sandbox Village; and the Water Lab, with a moat, a domelike fountain, and a wading pool. Later this summer, a free water taxi will make the five-minute trip back and forth to Governors Island.

Update: as reader “hoppy” points out, the ferry to Governors Island [yes, there’s no apostrophe: the island must have been named for a plurality of governors] also begins this weekend.

Actually, the free ferry from Pier 6 to Governors’ Island will start this Saturday at 11:00 AM (not “later this summer”).

I was there for the press event this morning. Every politician with any possible connection or excuse to be there, was actually there. It looks like a great place and I look forward to spending lots of time there this summer.

I just got off the ferry from Governor’s Island. It’s less than 5 minutes from point to point. A decent amount of people on the island but it didn’t feel crowded or overwhelming. Busy at the new playground too.
