St. George Hotel Brick Thrower Nabbed

The Brooklyn Eagle confirms that a brick thrower was apprehended by police this morning atop the St. George Hotel. We will link to the Eagle's coverage when it is published online later today.

The Eagle is now reporting that a Pace University student identified only as "Jason" was responsible for the brick tossing morning of terror on Henry Street:

Brooklyn Eagle: Student Nabbed…: Alec Drummond, who was at the scene when the incident occurred at around 9 a.m., said the young man had thrown two or three cinder blocks into Henry Street. Drummond directed people walking on the sidewalk to cross the street or stand under the awning of the lobby entrance to the No. 2 and 3 train’s Clark Street train station.

“I think he was just trying to hit cars,” said Drummond, pointing to a young, brown-haired man still peering over the edge of the St. George, even after police and firemen arrived. Smashed cinder blocks.

A police source added, “It was an act of vandalism, not hurting people.”

I am so so very angry with this. Of course he was going to hurt someone. This is a disgrace!!! Not the first time this happened, I would have bet money it wasn’t a person throwing things, I thought it was stuff falling off the building, I am DUMB!! He could have killed someone, young, old, baby, and so on, DAMN THEM!!!!

  • Lisa

Just thinking…The boy doesn’t deserve to live in the dorms any more. He should be kicked out of school. He must have serious mental problems he needs lots of help!! He could have killed many people of all types. Anybody else as upset as I am?

  • yo

So when is Pace moving its students out of that building? That day cannot come soon enough.

  • yo

Lisa – never mind being kicked out of the dorm – he should be prosecuted for criminal negligence.

  • JL

As a nearby resident, I too am disturbed and hope this kid ends up in jail and gets the help he needs. Fortunately, most of the students only have a few months left in these buildings. Glad everyone is alright though. (Hmm, looks like they also need to reevaluate roof access in these student-occupied buildings)

  • nabeguy

Good point JL. How in the world was anyone, let alone a deranged kid, allowed access to a roof? Even the sanest of college kids would be tempted by the opportunity of mischief that a roof offers, although most would likely opt for water-balloons and not cinder blocks.

This is nothing new: some years back kids from the Saint George were urinating out the windows at passersbys! The culprits were handled and thrown out of the building though.

  • Alberto Gonzales

    passersbys?

Pace isn’t really a good fit for the neighborhood. Maybe they should turn the St. George into a dorm for NYU or, better yet, Wesleyan.

  • http://fotw.fivestarflags.com/images/u/us-ny-bk.gif MadeInBrooklyn

Wow, bust my chops on what was obviously a typo? Regardless, Pace students not a good fit? What’s that mean, too many lower-income kids or just not smart enough? Yes, I’m sure the NYU kids wouldn’t get totally wasted and throw stuff out the windows as they’d be too busy studying. Maybe we should just go back to the old days and fill the hotel back up with crackheads, and the almost-dead. Let’s bring back the days of “do you want a date, honey?” on the corner of Clark and Henry. Perhaps we can get the Club Wild Fire to re-open too… Asshole.

  • yo

I’m hoping that they renovate the St. George and open it up as either a boutique hotel or “luxury” apartment building. Seems like a no-brainer to me. Hotel with a nice restaurant / lounge would be sweet….

Point being — I lost track while enjoying a good rant — that the ‘hood just needs to pressure the administration of the building to beef up inner-security and penalties for the brats who live there when they act out.

  • joe

I’m sure the kid would find it funny when he hits and kills a little child. There are so many familes in this area and 9am has plenty of foot traffic at that time. I can’t believe people ( educated people at that) are trying to make an argument for college kids to carry guns to defend themselves. You’ll have an idiot like this one who has no judgement who will kill innocent people on the premise of “vandalism, not hurting people.”

  • Alberto Gonzales

Let me congratulate you, Made in Brooklyn, on your stellar sarcasm identification skills.

  • nabeguy

    Alberto/Made – Cool it guys. This is a blog…not a flog.

  • http://www.bobstaake.com/willardmullin/images/ill_mets.gif MadeInBrooklyn

    Thanks, killer!

and btw, to all, as far as i can tell those dorms host students from pace as well as nyu, brooklyn law (the worst of the lot) and others.

  • http://www.bobstaake.com/willardmullin/images/ill_mets.gif MadeInBrooklyn

Hey nabeguy, the killer comment was directed at Alberto, not you… and I am not sure what a flog is, but I will drop it even if I was having a bit of fun. Most important is that we all obviously love the neighborhood. Right?

  • nabeguy

Whew! I was just about to ask you about that, so thanks for clearing that up. Flog, as in whipping, as in a dead horse. In other words, let it go.
And your point about other schools being represented by the student poopulation is well taken…all I can say is that the future of America is looking rather dim if these kids are representative of tomorrow’s leaders.

  • os

If you are passionate about your “hood” then look in the mirror! Its an upscale million dollar block with property values that will continue to increase!!!dorm students bye, bye – HELLO – W Hotel!

  • Alberto Gonzales

Sure. Anyway, I was trying to make fun of elitist comments in some earlier threads on the ‘George, but I couldnt’ resist the grammar policing. (The tipoff was suggesting it be a dorm for a bobo school in Connecticut.)

    Bring back the salt-water pool!

  • http://www.selfabsorbedboomer.blogspot.com Claude Scales

Speaking of bobo schools, it’s a shame Finch College has gone out of business (check their very eclectic alumnae list).

  • BLS Alum

to clarify – there are no brooklyn law students in the st. george. BLS owns several brownstones in the hood and houses the large majority of its students in it’s own tower in downtown brooklyn – so don’t go blaming BLS students for the behavior of the 18 – 20 year old Pace kids….

  • http://www.gasolinealleyantiques.com/sports/images/baseball/284-423.jpg MadeInBrooklyn

Hey BLS Alum… point taken! I was misinformed there… There is so much more to blame BLS students for anyway, like ruining the pleasure of anyone who trys to drink in local bars, like brazen head or floyd (esp. on a thursday night), or for not knowing how to tip the people working hard to serve them their vomit-inducing drinks, even though daddy is footing the bill via the credit cards you all seem to slap down like it’s play money!

  • bigdeal001

Who are you people to judge an entire university for the actions of one indivisual. I live in the george and i new the kid and he was as hard working as they get, i dont now what happened to him, except that he just snapped, and that can happen to anyone when to many things go bad in life. and i’ll have u know Alberto every NYU kid i have meet this year since moving in has been a cocain abuser, and drunk. Just go to some of the bars they hang at and see how they act. Finally good news for all the pace haters, Pace will no longer be at the george or clark. They got a building in downtown that will be opperational next year.

  • above average joe

Well, I guess from “bigdeal001″ we’ve learned that you don’t have to be smart or know how to spell to get into Pace.

  • http://www.gasolinealleyantiques.com/sports/images/baseball/284-423.jpg MadeInBrooklyn

bigdeal001: your spelling and grammar speaks volumes… Best of luck!

  • BLS Alum

    madeinbrooklyn,

way to make sweeping generalizations that are 99% false!! I think you left this off of your previous post:

“HEY YOU KIDS!!! Get off of my lawn!!!”

To educate you further, I will let you know that the large majority of BLS students pay their way through school (usually with the help of a staggering amount of student loans)……so this idea of rich law students running around with Daddy’s credit card is in your imagination…….

I’m guessing that you got boned on a tip once by a BLS student and you’re a little bitter?

  • BLS Alum

and p.s. – this isn’t the 1970’s – using a credit card does not indicate wealth. In fact, it’s usually the opposite…….

  • bigdeal001

i have been in the country for 1 1/2 yeasr, and i must say my spelling and english is better then most american youths…but thank you for the comment, maybe one day we can meet up and you can help me correct my errors.

  • http://www.gasolinealleyantiques.com/sports/images/baseball/284-423.jpg MadeInBrooklyn

Hey BLS, thanks for the education! A clarification: I am hardly bitter about losing out on a tip but more sad about my lost pleasure in area bars and my local bartenders’ tips. And trust me, “you kids” don’t know how to tip: 5% – 10% to hard-working folks that are running their asses off to make you 15 SoCo and lime shots all at once ain’t right, especially when they’re going to be cleaning up your puke a few hours later.

  • http://www.gasolinealleyantiques.com/sports/images/baseball/284-423.jpg MadeInBrooklyn

Mr. Bigdeal001: if what you write is in fact true about being new to the country, then I offer an honest apology for busting your chops.
