The old Blue Rose space on Montague and Hicks appears to have become campaign headquarters to Doug Biviano’s city council campaign.

Had all the experiences mentioned above with National Grid. They also lost my payment twice, and last month they forgot to include a return envelope in the bill!

Just stopped by the wine bar. was told it was a “soft opening” tonight! they were very nice and the place looks good. We came too late to be served but will be back tomorrow, hopefully.

@LC – regarding Time Warner phone.

I have this system, but be warned. Because of the constant construction that takes place in Brooklyn Heights area, your service at times may get interrupted.

What this means: If your cable goes out, so does your access to internet, email and phone. Then, you need to find another method to contact Time Warner and alert them of your situation. THEN…. if it can’t be fixed through their remote service, you will need to wait for a repairman to come out the next available appointment.

It’s cheap, but the hidden cost can be aggravation.

What’s up with all those new mango sellers? Where are they from and why did they suddenly appear? The price, $2, is the same from all of them.

Thanks for the all car info.

Any recommendations on where to buy fresh fish in the neighborhood or close by?

  • Monty

I bought fish from Garden of Eden once and it turned out to be past its prime :( If you are willing to walk a bit, Fish Tales on Court St is probably the best quality around here. I have also had good luck with the frozen fish from TJs.

Any renters out there whose leases are coming due? I just got a rent increase and am wondering how fair that is, given the overall slump in rents. It seems to me that they are generally flat or down, so I’m wondering if now might be the time to make a move. Anybody out there been shopping for a new place and noticed a downward trend?

I also don’t understand why people shop at Garden of Eden. Haven’t been there in years, the produce is so so but overpriced. I’ve bought prepared foods that were spoiled. The Korean grocery store on Atlantic next to Sahadi’s is well priced & usually carries fresh fruits & vegetables.

Fish Tales for fish, Staubitz for meats. I’ve been going more to Trader’s Joes & less & less to Key Foods on Montague & Sahadi’s.

I shop mostly at fairway and key food for stables. Trader Joe’s for frozen food, freeze dried fruits and organic milk. Sahadi’s for olive oil, crackers, olives and nuts, atlantic grocery store for fruit and vegetables, Staubitz for meats, Fish tales for seafood. I know it is a lot of trekking but if you want great ingredients you go to the specialty store. I would never think of buying seafood or meat from a regular grocery store.

Garden of Eden is a last resort–usually a spice that is not carried anywhere etc. Their prices are crazy and nothing is fresh and once 6 years ago when I just moved here and didn’t know any better we have spoiled prepared food that we had to throw away.

Time warner phone is fine but three caveats 1) the sound is a little flat 2) if your cable goes down so does your phone line. 3) My router (which is where your phone line hooks to) blew up once and I was without a phone until I went to one of their locations to pick up a new one (a hassle slightly less troublesome than DMV )

I’ve moved most of my shopping from Key on Montague to Trader Joe’s, though I live less than a block from Gristede’s. That place is horrible, but is used by a lot of students living in the St. George residences, and by locals who don’t care about saving money. You may have noticed that stuff you can’t buy at TJ’s is the only stuff you’ll buy at Key, as I have. Diet soda, faux cheese, lower carb OJ, Smart Balance spread, sugar-free Jell-O, etc. And you may have noticed that the aisles at Key are less crowded, and that there are fewer cashiers. The place has definitely been hurt by TJ’s, where the lines are so much longer for the 19 (!) cashiers who are busy almost all the time.

Times being what they are, I’ve had Chinese take-out exactly twice in the last 10 months. And I don’t miss it.

I go to Garden of Eden for their salad bars, which are better than you’ll find in the typical bodega. The cold bar, the hot bar, and the breakfast bar (yogurt, granola, fruit) cost $6.99/lb., $7.99/lb., and (I think) $5.99/lb., respectively, but go half off after 7:30 PM. This is unadvertised, but the cashiers know the discount codes.

PJL, I like Fish Tales on Court, but it’s hard to get there during the week from the North Heights. Believe it or not, Pickles & Peas (or is it Peas & Pickles?) has really good fresh fish! I always get salmon there on my way home.

  • PJL

Thanks for the fish tips. I’ll check out Fish Tales and maybe even get my nerve up to try the fish at Peas & Pickles; it does look good….

Don’t know why Gristede’s doesn’t improve themselves… they have such a great location for those of us who live in the North Heights….

Just a heads up…According to the website, the free Governors Island Ferry is running from Fulton Ferry this Sunday, 6/14/09—(last week it was only on Saturday). I’m definitely grabbing my bike and a light picnic lunch for tomorrow…
