DOH Shuts Down Haagen-Daz(?)

Eater reports that the Haagen Daz store at 120 Montague Street has been shut down by the Department of Health.  The DOH seems to be on a rampage, as many tipsters have mentioned to us that violations that were previously overlooked or not cited are now causing eateries to go over or come dangerously close to being shut down.  It takes 28 or more violation points for an establishment to be closed down.  At its last inspection conducted in July 2006,  the store received 7 violation points. Looking back to 2004, the store has never received more than 9.

Update: There have been many comments, some quite animated, about this report. The accuracy of the Eater piece is in question since no one aside from the "Eater tipster" has seen the alleged DOH notice. As mentioned above, it seems unlikely that a store would go from an all time high of 9 violation points to shut down in 3 years.

I think it’s really shameful the way that this blog has become a feeding ground for petty gossip. Get your facts straight before you present them as facts (for example, in this Haagen Daz case, there are no signs in the windows indicating that the closing has anything to do with the DOH – if they were the cause, they would make quite obvious, ie: sticker in the window). If there is valid news to report, please report it. If you have questions, please, ask them. But keep the rumors and hearsay out of it – they belittle what this online community is designed for.
Not only that, but this type of smear gossip hurts local businesses (that Haagen Daz has been on Montague Street for decades, so it should be treated like a local business). Take the uproar over Monty Q’s, for example: that business is owned and operated by a family that has served Brooklyn Heights since the 1960’s – the DOH exaggerated the problems they were having and this blog ran with the drama.
And how about the whiney yuppies who complained about Fascati’s sign being an “eyesore”? That pizzeria has been in Brooklyn Heights longer than most of you have been alive – it is independent businesses and neighborhood staples like these (with personality!) that make Brooklyn great – and they are becoming extinct. My biggest fear is that people like the commenters in this blog – uptight, transplanted yuppies with no sense of neighborhood or culture – will be the ones running the show, and all we’ll have left in the Heights are mattress stores, cell phone stores, real estate agencies, and over-priced retail clothing franchises. I suppose that’s the way it’s going to end up – Brooklyn Heights will soon be known as “Manhattan South”. What a shame.
PS: leave the “Goggle Brothers” alone. They have lived in the South Heights for more than forty years, and they don’t bother anyone. If you people are so curious about them, try going about it the good ol’ fashioned way and talking with them, instead of snickering at them behind their backs.

Okay anon, so what would YOU want this blog to be focusing on?

Nick, thanks for your comments. See below:

Fink says: the story above clearly states that the DOH has been out of control lately. While I’m sure you agree that rat droppings in anyone’s food is just plain bad it’s obvious that the department is being a lot more zealous in their enforcement than ever before. As far as petty gossip, the original source as linked to, is Eater. They received a tip from someone in the neighborhood. Subsequent comments here (as yours proves) have contradicted that report. Viva Free Speech!

Monty Q’s was closed by the DOH. We reported it. We linked to follow up in the Brooklyn Paper written by the super fantastic staff there.

And how about the whiney yuppies who complained about Fascati’s sign being an “eyesore”? Fink says: Yuppies? They went out with shoulder pads. Uptight? Oh please. And mattress stores, lousy eyeglass joints suck for me too. For the record, as I’ve stated here before I am borough born and raised. No transplant from Idaho here.

Fink says: Now you’re just sounding like a ‘you kids get off my lawn’ type. We’re not snickering, we’re curious. Do you not agree that Houdini was the greatest magician of all time?

Isn’t there a moderator on this site? Can’t you remove postings that are fictional? I really would like to see some control here to stop bashing business in Brooklyn!

Fink, I must take issue with your rebuttal to Nick: “As far as petty gossip, the original source as linked to, is Eater. They received a tip from someone in the neighborhood. Subsequent comments here (as yours proves) have contradicted that report. Viva Free Speech!”

Eater was iresponsible in posting that “tip” from a person who saw paper in the window and immediately jumped to the obviously false DOH conclusion. Eater was surprised to see the DOH even operates in Brooklyn, so…

If you had simply put a question mark at the end of “DOH Shuts Down Haagen-Dazs” you’d be on much stronger ground with your reportage. There’s free speech and then there’s defamation.

    Well said CK, see update.

Here is a link to the DoH for Haagen Daz on Montague Street. Not only is it not closed, there doesnt appear to have been an inspection since last December.

    http://167.153.150.32/RI/web/detail.do?method=detail&restaurantId=40705843&inspectionDate=20071201

However, to assume that a restaurant cant go from good to unacceptable in 3 years doesnt make sense.
