Need a place to park? Here’s a photo of the end of Remsen Street, by Max Henry Hubacher, in 1952:

running in to parked cars at the end of that circle was my preferred stopping method when I was learning to roller skate.

It’s been maybe two months since a tree fell in a storm and damaged a fence on Pineapple Street between Hicks & Willow. Unfortunately there is rusted barbed wire at the top of this fence and it is now protruding out towards the sidewalk and maybe only four feet from the ground. I’d hate to see someone get injured due to this hazardous condition. I’m not really sure what building this property is associated with, but it may be 104 Hicks Street. What can we do?

Did you call 311? If not, you should.

  • brooklynbull

A wonderful shot, on many levels –
    thank you, Andrew

Apparently much damage to stores and banks on Atlantic and Court by black-clad protestors? ninjas? last night. Window of empty Barney’s smashed, as were windows of BofA ATM at SE corner of Court and Atlantic, other stores in the area. Lots of coverage to come. Gothamist report here:

Walked by Cardinal Market an hour ago, and it’s closed—”coming back in 2021″ on the door—and a worker inside was moving out perishable vegetables and other foods.

Also, Columbia Heights was closed from Pineapple north to Cranberry by a metal construction barricade. No DOT permits or advance notice. I called it in to 311: Complaint #311-04428522. Don’t expect any timely action, but hey, I tried.

Forget Columbia Heights. Between one thing and another it doesn’t bother to open up anymore.

Hi, anyone know if people are planning to put out candy this year? I know trick or treating hasn’t been banned, and I know that the tradition (at least in the north part of the neighborhood) is to sit on the top of the stoop and let the kids take a piece of candy from the bowl on the bottom step. Just checking!

Also seems to be a great place for Antisemite Biden supporters from the Heights to throw rocks at Jewish Trump supporters on the BQE below. 28 years in the Heights and I always sensed a undercurrent of ugly. Now it’s on full display. SMDH. And please don’t start with the “they don’t live here” BS. If I ever saw a poster boy for a Heights resident it’s that shlubby looking guy in the green coat. Where’s all the preachy platitudes about diversity, tolerance, and inclusion now? Pure hypocrisy, if you don’t follow the dogma, off with your head. Just helping stupid Orangeman get reelected. It’s going to be a long 4 years. And no, I didn’t vote for Trump.

Mailed mine almost a week-and-a-half ago, and see it’s still in transit with the post office…

I still have postal nightmares, from when I published a magazine and the PO screwed up, sigh.

  • meschwar

If it hasn’t been delivered by 11/3, you can still vote in person.

  • meschwar

To clarify, you can vote in person even if your ballot has been received and counted by then. You can always vote in person regardless of the status of your absentee ballot.

  • CassieVonMontague

On your ballot, you may have noticed all the judges are running unopposed except for one. The reason why is because of some byzantine election maneuvering by Republicans in Western New York.

Beth Parlato, a regular on Fox News who thinks “our schools teach what’s politically correct instead of the truth,” lost the Republican Primary in NY-27, the area surrounding Buffalo and south of Rochester. However she was still on the ballot for the Conservative Party.

Worried she would siphon votes from the Republican candidate, the GOP wanted her off the ballot. She agreed, but legally the only way for a candidate to be removed from the ballot at that point was to nominate her for another position. So they nominated her for the Supreme Court in Brooklyn.

So that’s why an attorney from Genesee County is nominated for a judgeship in Brooklyn.

I walked by today and didn’t see any tree or branch on that fence…part of the barbed wire was pushed down, so it looks like that was the spot but the branch has been removed

It’s been officially called off inside my co-op building. Nobody wants to be face-to-face with potentially infected kids. That said, with stoops it’s different; putting a bowl out on the bottom step seems like a safe solution.

“Nobody wants to be face-to-face with potentially infected kids.”

I don’t remember New Yorkers unifying under that slogan when we were talking about school reopening.

  • Reggie

Voting for judges picked by party leaders makes no sense regardless of the individual.

  • Jorale-man

Well, it should work both ways. The kids themselves don’t want to be in contact with infected adults either (or least their parents don’t wish for such a thing). Everyone should be careful on Halloween is the bottom line.

Andrew: My ballot has been living at the post office for two weeks. I called the Board of Ed yesterday to ask if I should just “do the line” on 11/3. The first question I was asked was whether it showed “Voter Mailed Ballot,” and that, if it did, the ballot would, in fact, be counted. This is all so damned odd…. https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/e7fb16b052d2b0f508a7fc78fb26383e621de03c9904567c159d9dc8f85836fa.png

Mine has been in limbo, too. 8/22: application submitted; 8/27-9/14, reviewing application; 9/17, application approved. 9/23, ballot mailed; 9/28, out for delivery. 9/30-10/3, second corrected ballot approved and mailed; 10/6, out for delivery.

Finally, 10/20, voter mailed ballot. Then…nothing.

So I will likely vote in person on Tuesday as well.

  • Andrew Porter

I saw that pushed-down fence as well, so I guess the beavers finally harvested the branch…

Here’s some random footage of Atlantic Avenue in the 1980s. A coffee shop occupied the space where Heights Chateau now lives. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oQDTLhauqPg

  • Reggie

Actually, it looks like where not to go if you need a place to park.

  • Bornhere

The corner (Atlantic and Henry) was the home of La Mancha, a really fine, decades-old restaurant serving excellent Spanish cuisine. Their demise heralded chaos for that corner, after some 50 years of stability.

Tomorrow, if you can tear yourself away from political coverage, “Sweet November” (1968) is playing on TCM. (Channel 82 Spectrum) at 10AM. There are plenty of scenes of Brooklyn Heights some of which are included in the attached link. Also included in the video is a quick look back at Cranberries at its peak. Time marches on.

Checked this morning, and they’d finally received my mail ballot. So no standing in line for me!

Weird…. Good “reviews” here and elsewhere. Seemed to have found a niche (judging from few empty seats outside.) … Hope it’s not a “canary/coal mine” re what temperature changes mean for eateries using sidewalks & streets. I would guess that few own their buildings, and landlords seldom have hearts of gold, so any fall die-off strikes me as making a 2021 return worse than iffy.

    Thats a cool Hudson par,Park, looks like a Wasp…..
