“Bouncy Bridge” Replacement Appears Near Completion

Today was a pleasant day, and your correspondent decided to take some needed “solitary exercise.” Properly masked and gloved, and carefully maintaining social distance, I walked the length of the Promenade, continued down Columbia Heights to Brooklyn Bridge Park, then back up and home. On the way, I saw that the “non-bouncy” replacement of the pedestrian bridge connecting Squibb Park and Brooklyn Bridge Park, which had been naked pylons the last time I saw it, now has reached what appears to be a state of near completion, at least of the upper portion (see my photo). The recently announced ban on non-essential construction will likely bring further work to a stop  for an indefinite time, but at least we know the bridge hasn’t been abandoned.

    Except, of course, you access it from Squibb Playground, which has been closed, and Brooklyn Bridge Park, which is (or isn’t?) closed…

    So funny to me that amid a global pandemic where all businesses have shut down, and after years of failure for the various iterations of this bridge, the new Squib Bridge has appeared in a matter of days. Also seems like such strange planning given that the promenade will likely be demolished (or, at least, inaccessible) in the coming years because of BQE construction? Just the perfect display of bureaucratic ineptitude. Puzzling.

    Have been using what we used to call Deadmans Hill for exercise these days. Have been able to watch progress on bridge. Have noticed that wood planks were being installed on bridge over past weeks. Not sure if they have completed.
    Even if is, can’t open Bridge to public till after virus issue done.
    Wonderful timing for this Hard Luck Bridge!

    Don’t you think that the bridge was planned to be built way before the current pandemic? And why would the BQE reconstruction have ANYTHING to do with the Squibb Park Bridge?
