Movies With A View Begins Tomorrow; Other Events Coming Up At Brooklyn Bridge Park

This summer’s run of free Movies With A View begins tomorrow (Thursday, July 7) evening on the Harbor View Lawn, Pier 1, with the Gene Kelly/Donald O’Connor/Debbie Reynolds classic Singin’ in the Rain (the weather forecast gives a ten percent chance of rain tomorrow). The show begins at 6:00 with sounds by DJ Emch Subatomic, followed by Tim Sessler’s short film Erosion, and by the feature film at sundown.

Also tomorrow night, starting at 8:30 elsewhere on Pier 1, members of the Amateur Astronomers Association of New York will set up telescopes for you to enjoy a “Journey to the Stars”. More information here. (The linked page shows Journey to the Stars happening on the Harbor View Lawn, but this would conflict with the movie. Our guess, based on past experience, is that the telescopes will be set up along the esplanade by the East River, north of the Granite Prospect.) These events will continue each Thursday through August 25.

Dance enthusiasts have a treat this Saturday evening, July 9, at 7:00 on Harbor View Lawn, as Gibney Dance gives a free performance. There will be more of these on the following Saturdays, through July 30. More information here.

On Sunday, July 10 from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at 334 Furman Street “Pier Kids” will present arts activities with Private Picassos from 11:00 to noon and performances by Arm of the Sea Theater from noon to 1:00. It’s all free. More information here.

This year’s “Books Beneath the Bridge” series begins on Monday evening, July 11 at 7:00 on Pier 1’s Granite Prospect with a celebration of the publication of Heather Wolf’s book Birding at the Bridge: In Search of Every Bird on the Brooklyn Waterfront. The park’s partner for this event is, appropriately, Freebird Books. There’s more information here.
