Shot and a beer at Monteros?

  • MonroeOrange

no one believes you ever went to Montero’s…no spaghetti carbonara!

  • DIBS

LOL. In fact, I threw my retirement party at Monteros…catered food and open bar.

I think the cocktail menu at Jack the Horse is hard to beat and holds its own against the better cocktail bars in the borough.

River Deli seems to have expanded its cocktail offerings beyond distinctly Italian cocktails. Not my favorite cocktail menu, in part because I never enjoy aperitifs and digestifs and other cocktails that feature Campari, vermouth, etc. So, it’s not *my* favorite cocktail menu, but I respect what they’re doing and think its high quality in its own way.

Flipping through other restaurants and bars in the neighborhood, including the north side of Atlantic, and nothing jumps out to me the way that Jack the Horse does. That’s my vote!

The cocktails at Colonie are great and many of them are made with vegetables/fruit in a juicer. If you’re willing to cheat a little with geography and take the south side of Atlantic into account too, though, I still prefer the Manhattan at Henry Public to any that are in the Heights proper. Long Island Bar is up there too.

    Second Jack the Horse!!

Cocktail “menus” are for wusses and those who don’t know what a real cocktail is.

The Wide Awake at Henry Public is heaven on earth (i know, i know, it’s across Atlantic, but still…).

    well played sir

JtH Old Fashioned (Autumn and Winter)
    JtH Southside (Spring and Summer)

Though the atmosphere is lacking, Tom at Teresa’s makes a fine classic Martini and it’s only $8

Black and Tan (aka Half-and-Half) at Eamonn’s or Heights Saloon…

Ah, nostalgia. All I ever had at Capulet’s was beer, and an occasional shot of Jameson.

While Matthew makes a marvelous Old Fashioned at JTH, my vote goes to his Buffalo Rifle.

Thanks! I’ll give it a try.

What’s your definition of a “real cocktail”? I’m thinking it’s along the lines of that of the late, much lamented, Paul Schiffman of the Lion’s Head (the day it closed, I knew Greenwich Village’s days as Bohemia were over): anything with more than two ingredients (not counting ice, an olive, or a twist) is anathema.

Eamonn’s? When was the last time you were out for a cocktail?

Jack the Horse as served up by Matt

    Uh, not a “Cocktail”…

Once it gets chilly, the Hot Toddy at JTH is tough to beat

  • Michael Dacko

Seriously – Eamonn’s closed down like 100 years ago.

Gin martinis and negronis at Noodle Pudding are always perfect.

followed closely by Clark St Station Saloon.

The martini’s at either Thai Lantern or Custom House are top notch!

“Underage whisky shots” That explains a lot… LOL.

The cocktails at the Long Island Restaurant are very good, albeit somewhat brazenly priced.
