Back in October, the Brooklyn Eagle announced that a “Swiss Family Robinson” type couple had emigrated here and sunk $700K into a new venture called HomeStories. The store, the story claimed, was set to open in the former home of St. Marks Comics at 148 Montague Street in January. The New York Times reports today that it will open tomorrow (5/31):
NYT: The husband-and-wife designers Paul and Sophie Yanacopoulos-Gross were living in Switzerland but contemplating a move to New York when a real estate listing in Brooklyn Heights caught Paul’s eye: a parlor-floor storefront with a fabulous fanlight window on Montague, a tree-lined street that reminded him of his hometown, London. The couple snapped up the lease. This weekend, their new store, HomeStories, opens there, selling contemporary and artisanal wares from around the world.
Paola Navone’s seating for Gervasoni and Mr. Yanacopoulos-Gross’s own minimalist designs (his white-lacquered trestle table is $6,800) mix with primitive 19th-century elm stools from China (starting at $180) and overscale bamboo pendant lanterns by Nelson Sepulveda ($510 and up).
Good news for those who are captivated by the store’s serene atmosphere: The couple also plan to offer a home-styling service.
