There have been no bus routes between Manhattan and Brooklyn Heights, since June 2010. People of both boroughs need a better transit alternative than MTA trains and street-clogging cars. The B51 bus went from Downtown Brooklyn over the Manhattan Bridge to Chinatown, the courthouses and City Hall. It’s time for this valuable service to be reinstated.
I urge ALL of you fine people to contact your local politicians and demand the reestablishment of the B51 Bus route – even if you don’t travel this route. Do it for your fellow citizen. We need to help each other.

Couldn’t agree more. As a relatively new BH resident who recently had knee surgery, it would be terrific to have this bus access to Manhattan. Apparently Change.org had a petition to MTA that is now closed, but it only gathered
91 signatures. Surely there are more people who need this service. Can we organize a community group (or would the BHA take this on) to advocate for the return of B51?

I was walking down the hill on Columbia Heights and saw that 3 cars were broken into. The same thing happened a few months ago by Poplar and Hicks. Anyone know if there is increased police supervision around the area at night?

During a walk on Pierrepont on Sunday afternoon, I found two Crouch&Fitzgerald leather suitcases had been placed out on the curb for removal on Monday morning. Upon closer inspection of the suitcases, I saw they still had several old tags (including old TW tags) as well as a name tag: Brodsky, 64 Morton Street, NY NY. I picked up both suitcases and brought them home with me. I did some research on the internet and came to the conclusion that the suitcases belonged to Mr. Joseph Brodsky, Nobel laureate. Now…the question is…the suitcases are monogrammed K.S.M. Does anyone have any ideas who this could be?

Hi all–we’ve got a new puppy coming in July. Can anyone recommend any groomers, vets, and good pet shops (we’ve got some shopping to do since it’s our first) in the general area? Thanks in advance!

  • Banet

For our now departed Scottie, we’ve used the Groomers at the little pet store on Hicks and Pineapple with good results. We also used the pet store on Pineapple Walk and been perfectly happy.

In terms of a vet, we use Dr. Norton. Her office on Hicks and Cranberry closed but she then switched to doing exclusively housecalls. The price was great, the service couldn’t be beat, and her level of care and concern was wonderful. She can be reached at cjmnorton AT gmail.com — tell her that the owners of Henry the Scottie sent you. :-)

Cobble Hill Animal Clinic has been my vet choice for years and years, and the Petsmart on Atlantic Ave. has been a terrific addition to our neighborhood. Though my pets are cats and birds, the store certainly seems to have everything needed for a new puppy, including groomers and a training program.

Yeah, it’s a bummer but like all major new city parks, it needs to be self-supporting. With the cost of upkeep for all those buildings, the seawall, everything else — not to mention the cost of the ferry itself — they had to something to raise *some* funds. And when you get into the details (free at 10 and 11, kids are free, island is now open 7 days a week, senior citizens are 1/2 price, bikes are free, etc), it’s not bad at all.

    From their press release:

“Governors Island will be open seven days a week for the first time.

Ferries will run from Lower Manhattan all seven days and will also run from Brooklyn Bridge Park’s Pier 6 on Saturdays, Sundays, Memorial Day and Labor Day.

Children under 12 ride for free at all times and senior citizens’ fares are half price.

Morning ferries (10 AM and 11 AM) on Saturdays and Sundays are free for all.

All weekday and weekend afternoon ferries
from Brooklyn and Manhattan are $2 round trip for adults.

There is no surcharge for bicycles.”

It’s all about Rocco and Jezebel. They are at 89 Pineapple Walk. We have taken our dog there from day 1 and they are always 100% accommodating and personal. We leave him there when we are out of town, they bath him and we get our food there.

For vet we use Vinegar Hill Veterinary Group and are happy with them.

$4 isn’t bad. I am okay with that.

I adopted a kitten last Fall and have been taking her to Hope Vet in Boerum Hill. I’ve been very pleased with her care there. http://www.hopevet.com Additionally, I’ve discovered that ordering her cat food online has been the cheapest way to go. Good luck with your new addition!

    Khalid Sheikh Mohammed?

  • David on Middagh

    Kirk, Spock, McCoy?

His wife’s name was Maria Sozzani. I wonder if the monogram is somehow jumbled? I’m tempted to think it has to do with Karl Marx, but his middle initial was H, not S.

I second the recommendations for Rocco & Jezebel for stuff, grooming and boarding, and Vinegar Hill Vets for care (Dr. Neuman is great, though they are quite pricey). And while I encourage you to support local shops as much as you can bear to, I might also recommend getting recurring/stock gear (poop bags, food, training pads, that sort of thing) from either Wag.com or Chewy.com–you’ll save $$.

I’m having a lot of trouble identifying a new building I noticed near South Street Seaport while walking in the Brooklyn Bridge Park today, and was wondering if anyone here could help. It’s a small, narrow building with a striking geometric design and some red windows near the top. If I try to find it on Google Maps, it doesn’t seem to be there, which makes me think it was built this year or late last year. Am I going crazy? Please take a look at the uploaded image and let me know!

Sidewalk violation. Hi I recently received a sidewalk violation from the DOT for a property on Willow St. I am wondering if any others received such a notice and whether asking for a re inspection will result in a removal of the violation given my sidewalk is in relatively Ok condition

A local house of worship has three canvas signs of varying sizes attached to the facade of its building. The signs advertise all the wonders of the organization. Is this sort of thing permitted? The signs may very well come down eventually but I’ve noticed that they’ve been up many months now.

For pet supplies, pet emporium on montage and hicks is fantastic. Sam the owner is great, and they deliver. With Pet Smart new to the neighborhood, it’s more important than ever to support your local brooklyn heights small businesses.

I called 311 about trees north of Pierrepont on Hicks with wires constricting the trunks, and received two complaint numbers: one erroneously had the location as my home address; the other had the right location, but had the complaint as illegal tree removal. After I corrected that, the files were marked as closed with the offending wires removed. However, when I passed by Thursday, nothing had been done. If anyone has a wire cutter, please remove the wires from the trees, which are on the east side of Hicks between Pierrepont and Love Lane. The tree goddesses will thank you!
